PLAY EXPLORING HOMOPHOBIA IN THE BOXING AND LATINO COMMUNITY AT MIAMI DADE COLLEGE NORTH CAMPUSThe Miami Dade College North Campus theater department kicks off its
fall season with the timely and relevant play, Blade to the Heat,
which explores homophobia in the Latino and the boxing community. The play, performed by MDC theater students, will debut at the
William and Joan Lehman Theater located at Miami Dade College's
North Campus, 11380 NW 27th Avenue, Room 5120 on Friday, October 14
at 8 p.m. Additional play dates include Saturday, October 15, Friday, October
21 and Saturday, October 22 at 8 p.m., Sunday, October 16 at 2 p.m.
and Friday, October 21 at 11 a.m. The play, by Oliver Mayer, is a gritty and action-filled look at the
Latino boxing scene of 1959. It's a masterfully written tale of
boxers, homophobia, racism, ethnic hostilities and racial
opportunity exemplified and nurtured by the violent sport. The action starts when an introverted boxer, Pedro Quinn, scores a
surprising victory against a reining boxing champion, Mantequilla
Decima. The loss spurs a long string of taunts for Mantequilla who
begins to hear whispers that brand him as being gay. Speculation
soon arises about Pedro's sexual preference too, speculation that
soon becomes abundantly clear.
