ANDREWS LIVING ARTS STUDIO presents
THE LARAMIE PROJECT
By Moises Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project
February 10 - 26

The Andrews Living Arts Studio (ALA) is proud to present its third theatrical production, the critically acclaimed drama, The Laramie Project.

Written by Moises Kaufman and members of his collective, the New York-based Tectonic Theater Project, this compelling piece is based on the slaughter of Matthew Shepard, a student at the University of Wyoming, who was a victim of a hate crime fueled by homophobia. The play draws on hundreds of interviews conducted by the theatre company with town citizens, company members' own journal entries and published news reports. It is divided into three acts, and an ensemble portrays more than sixty characters in a series of short scenes.

The Laramie Project premiered at The Ricketson Theatre by the Denver Center Theatre Company in February 2000. It was then performed in the Union Square Theater in New York before a November 2002 performance in Laramie, Wyoming. It has also been performed by high schools, colleges, and community theaters across the country as well as professional regional productions, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

This ALA revival of Laramie will boast 19 South Florida resident actors who will play over 60 characters. Founding artistic director Robert Nation will steward the production which will include (in alphabetical order) J.P. Bounassar, Anna Carbonell, Christine Chavers, Dominick Daniel, David Daugherty, Ted Dvoracek, Jordana Forrest, Elizabeth Garrard, Elie Gottlieb, Careen Hutchinson, Barry Katz, Fern Katz, Corina Lander, Chris Merlino, Rebecca Nicholson, Ryan Patterson, Chris Santanelli, Kerry Sensenbach, and Tyler Stanley.

Andrews Living Arts Studio (ALA) is a collective performance company based in the heart of Downtown Fort Lauderdale anchoring the Flagler Arts and Technology District. The studio is a completely unique and flexible space in which the bold entrepreneurial spirit of creativity can be nurtured and will flourish. Their goal is to use the facility to make the fine and performing arts accessible to everyone - to gain life skills through training and to enrich our cultural experience through performances.

Now established for a year under the leadership of former arts teacher Robert D. Nation, ALA has produced theatrical productions and other variety performance projects. ALA is dedicated to sheltering, educating, training and shaping the next generation of artists. ALA achieves this by providing four distinct offerings: Studio Classes, Rental for the Artist, New Play Development, and Performance.

The Laramie Project will open on Thursday, February 10 and run until Saturday, February 26th. Performance days and times are Thursday through Saturday, starting at 7:30pm. Ticket prices are $20 (general admission), $15 (Seniors, age 62 and over; college students) and $10 (non-college students under age 18). Groups of 6 or more will receive a 10% discount off ticket price. There will also be talkback sessions with cast, director, and the community at large.
