Good Theater Receives $4,000 Grant in Support of 2013-14 Opener CLYBOURNE PARK

By:

Good Theater, the professional theater in residence at St. Lawrence Arts on MunJoy Hill in Portland, is pleased to announce that the Sam L. Cohen Foundation has awarded the company a grant in the amount of $4,000 for support of the opening show of the 2013-2014 season, Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris.

Clybourne Park won the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play and the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for drama. This production marks the Maine premiere of the award winning play. Clybourne Park is set in Chicago in 1959, Act One and the same house in 2009, Act Two. Each of the seven actors in the play portrays two characters as the audience experiences the change to the house and neighborhood over the course of 50 years.

In Act One a predominantly white neighborhood is thrown into turmoil when an African American family is set to move into one of the houses. Fifty years later, in Act Two, the now predominantly black neighborhood struggles when a white family wants to tear down this historic house and put up a mcmansion.

Funny and thought provoking, Clybourne Park is an exciting piece of theater in the style of such recent Good Theater Productions as August Osage Count, Good People and Next Fall.

Funds from the Cohen Foundation grant will be used to assist with the complicated set, additional rehearsal time and travel expenses for actors from New York.

Clybourne Park run October 2-27. This will be followed by The Grand Manner by A.R. Gurney November 6-24, Broadway at Good Theater December 5-8, Becky's New Car by Steven Dietz January 29 - February 23 and The Outgoing Tide by Bruce Graham March 5-30. Good Theater is celebrating its 12th season. For information on season tickets, call the Good Theater box office at 207-885-5883 or visit their website at www.goodtheater.com
