Walden Theatre Presents the 2010 Young Playwrights Festival

By:

Walden Theatre's young writers are back with several original short scripts for the 2010 Young Playwrights Festival. This year the program features six new works and one remount of a past YPF show.

YPF is an annual celebration of the talented writers involved in our Playwriting class, and the festival gives young writers the opportunity to fully produce their works with the help of Walden directors. Fellow Walden Theatre students perform all roles.

Director Lucas Adams said that this year's selection of plays touches on tough issues like teen violence and the current healthcare debate. "Most pieces are serious and dramatic," Adams said, "and they demonstrate strong storytelling skills for students their age."

Playwrights taking part in the Young Playwrights Festival are ages 13 to 18 and participate in Walden's Playwriting class. Walden's internationally renowned playwriting program was established in 1982 and was the first such program in the country. It has produced six published scripts and has been a part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Humana Festival of New American Plays.

New for Spring 2010 the Playwriting Class has been updated, with Walden partnering with Actors Theatre of Louisville to offer the New Voices Playwriting Class at Walden Theatre. In the class, students learn from Actors Theatre of Louisville education staff how to transform imagination into characters, dialogue and action by writing monologues, dialogues and short plays. Throughout the class, students create and act in new works that speak authentically in their own voice.

Tickets are available from Walden Theatre for $8. All shows are at Walden Theatre's black-box theatre at 1123 Payne Street, Louisville Ky. Shows are Thursday through Saturday Feb. 11, 12, and 13 at 7:30pm and there will be one matinee on Saturday Feb. 13 at 2pm.
