Wine in the Wilderness at Geffen Playhouse

Dates: 6/2/2027 - 7/4/2027

📍 Theatre:
Geffen Playhouse

Wine in the Wilderness, written by Alice Childress and directed by LaChanze, takes place during the 1964 Harlem riot in the apartment of painter Bill Jameson. As he seeks to capture the essence of Black womanhood for his art, tensions rise outside, leading to the unexpected arrival of a young woman whose presence challenges his artistic vision and societal assumptions. The play thoughtfully examines themes of class, gender, and representation, questioning who defines beauty and worth in a divided community. This production highlights the emotional immediacy of Childress's work, making it resonate powerfully with contemporary audiences.
