adapt: Jon Jory; dir: Paul Plunkett.
Voltaire's wildly imaginative novella Candide comes to the stage at Sacred Fools, in a freely adapted production that transplants its fantastical satire into the American South. After an indiscreet affair gets him booted off his home plantation, native Louisiana boy Candide finds himself thrust into a cruel world of betrayal and injustice. But this decent-hearted, down-home fellow is determined to hold fast to his optimistic belief in the essential goodness of human nature -- if only human nature didn't keep killing his friends and stealing his sheep. This innovative and fast-paced production will have you laughing and pondering in equal doses.
