SCR's Theatre for Young Audiences Series Presents A WRINKLE IN TIME, 2/5-2/27

South Coast Repertory tackles science fiction in its latest Theatre for Young Audiences production, an original adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's wildly popular young adult novel, A Wrinkle in Time. SCR Associate Artistic Director John Glore adapted this story of siblings Meg and Charles Wallace Murry, who travel through time to save their father from the dark force of It. Directed by Shelley Butler, Wrinkle runs Feb. 5-27 on the Julianne Argyros stage.

Wrinkle begins on "a dark and stormy night," as Meg and her little brother, Charles Wallace, sit drinking cocoa in the kitchen and longing for their father, a scientist who disappeared two years earlier. Then the mysterious Mrs. Whatsit arrives. Soon brother and sister are off on a mission to rescue their father, who is being held captive on a distant planet. They get help from a schoolmate, Calvin, Mrs. Whatsit's two strange sisters, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which, and the furry, tentacled Aunt Beast.

Butler directed SCR's The Brand New Kid, Charlotte's Web and James and the Giant Peach, along with the NewScripts readings of Bob and Incendiary. Other recent directing credits include No Way to Treat a Lady (The Colony Theatre Company), Charles L. Mee's Agamemnon 2.0 (Cadbury Theatre, UK) and the New York premiere of Adam Rapp's Mistral (Drama League). A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Butler has worked on such television shows as "ER," "Bones" and "The Unit."

Rebecca Mozo will play Meg, and Stewart Calhoun will play Charles Wallace. Rounding out the cast are James Michael Lambert as Calvin, Daniel Blinkoff as Father and Mrs. Which, William McGuire as Camazotz Man, Man with Red Eyes and Mrs. Whatsit and Tessa Auberjonois as Mother, Mrs. Who, Camazotz Woman and Aunt Beast.

The production's creative ensemble consists of Toby Algya (Composition and Sound Designer), Fred Kinney (Set Designer), Kimberly Colburn (Dramaturg) Amy Bristol Brownewell (Stage Manager), Paloma H. Young (Costume Designer) and Jason H. Thompson (Projection Designer).

SCR's Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) presents three professional productions each season designed especially for children and their families. In addition to the public performances, TYA hosts over 10,000 students from elementary schools annually in an effort to introduce the next generation to the magic of live theater.

Performances begin on Feb. 5 and continue through Feb. 27. Ticket prices range from $17 to $29. Low-priced previews are available from Feb. 5-12.
