The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' "Monday Nights with Oscar" will close the year with a screening of "Driving Miss Daisy" (1989), on Monday, December 13, at 7 p.m. at the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in New York City. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Alfred Uhry, who received an Adapted Screenplay Oscar for "Driving Miss Daisy," will join the film's director, two-time Academy Award® nominee Bruce Beresford, in an onstage discussion about the original play's journey from Off-Broadway hit to Best Picture-winning film. The play's current revival marks its Broadway debut.
"Driving Miss Daisy" produced two notable bits of Oscar history: it was the first time a movie based on an Off-Broadway play received the Best Picture award, and Best Actress winner Jessica Tandy became the oldest performer to win a competitive Oscar. The film also features an Oscar-nominated performance by Morgan Freeman, reprising his stage role as Hoke Colburn, Daisy's longtime driver and unlikely best friend in segregated Atlanta at the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is the world's preeminent movie-related organization, with a membership of more than 6,000 of the most accomplished men and women working in cinema. In addition to the annual Academy Awards - in which the members vote to select the nominees and winners - the Academy presents a diverse year-round slate of public programs, exhibitions and events; provides financial support to a wide range of other movie-related organizations and endeavors; acts as a neutral advocate in the advancement of motion picture technology; and, through its Margaret Herrick Library and Academy Film Archive, collects, preserves, restores and provides access to movies and items related to their history. Through these and other activities the Academy serves students, historians, the entertainment industry and people everywhere who love movies.
