UN TESTO INTENSO CHE FA RIFLETTERE SULL'EFFIMERA ILLUSIONE DI POTER VINCERE LA MORTE
Week two of the festival carries on with lawyers, Biblical transformation, bare honesty, and a firecracker First Lady.
The Lion King swept the Tony awards when it was on Broadway, and even for this semi-skeptical theatre reviewer, it’s easy to see why. It seems impossible to translate a cartoon about the lives of animals into a stage production performed by people, or at least, it seems like it will be corny. This production, however, is completely unlike any other theatrical experience. It hews faithfully enough to the story to satisfy the super fans, but adds so many new elements that it’s astonishing and delightful to watch.
“Kim’s Convenience,” now playing at The Old Globe through June 14, delivers a warm and funny portrait of family, community, and the complicated push and pull between tradition and change.
What did our critic think of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES at Theatre Rhinoceros?
What did our critic think of THE 39 STEPS IS A DELIGHTFUL ROMP AT ELMWOOD PLAYHOUSE at Elmwood? So pronounced is the raucous, madcap flavor of the show – consciously channeling the vaudevillian humor of early 20th Century English music halls, a setting that bookends the play – that the plot itself virtually plays second fiddle to the non-stop shenanigans, which are enough to make you plotz with guffaws throughout.
What did our critic think of OUT AT SEA at Theater Grottesco?
Tosca is Giacomo Puccini's fast-paced thriller of an opera; brimming with tension and political intrigue. For many it is Puccini's best work, yet incredibly it has never been staged at Glyndebourne. Until now. It is a show of firsts all round: the first mainstage production for director Ted Huffman and is the first Puccini opera for Glyndebourne’s music director Robin Ticciati, who conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the first of two performance runs.
BARTLEBY begins with a tease. The curtain only rises a little, just enough to show feet. Expressive. Unexpected and intriguing from the first second. When it finally lifts, Vincent Lemaire’s set reveals itself in clean, minimal lines, white bricks, a black table, black chairs, and a bust. It’s atemporal, and still you feel the lawyer’s office in your bones.
Based on Ron Chernow's 2004 biographical book titled Alexander Hamilton, this musical tells the true story of America's $10 Founding Father. The story begins when he was an immigrant who came to New York from the West Indies. Eventually, he became George Washington's right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was later named the nation's first Treasury Secretary.
Is it possible to be in love with two people at the same time? Is cheating on one’s spouse ever acceptable? Can physical intimacy exist without emotional intimacy?
THE NOTEBOOK The Musical was a charming chamber piece when I first read Bekah Brunstetter's adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' breakout bestseller. But the touring version is now playing to bigger houses than either its original Chicago premiere or its New York engagement. With Broadway-extravaganza pretensions. Call me back when a local company decides to mount this musical at an appropriate scale.
Samira, a Scottish Aid Worker, goes through a ‘baptism of fire’ during the revolutions in the Middle East. Certain she can make a difference, she takes on mission after mission, but is quickly confronted by the reality of war, aid work and her own disillusionment.
You won’t want to miss this one.
A polished and highly entertaining production with excellent singing, sharp comic performances and beautifully slick set changes. Stylish costumes, standout performances and the wonderfully dark humour of the musical make it a thoroughly enjoyable night at the theatre.
What did our critic think of THE HEART OF ROBIN HOOD at Kanata Theatre?
Audrey Landers and Daniel Landers have dipped their toes in the cabaret waters, and found a place where their brand of musical comedy should fit in quite nicely.
Certain facets of the human condition are foundational to our very existence – change, connection, desire. One such particularly toxic universal truth is a constant need to be something more than we currently are. To search for happiness in external achievement rather than within ourselves, in our simple joys. Pippin at Signature Theatre breathes within that precise virulence, relatively orchestrated by a troupe of impeccably costumed and choreographed players. A feast for the eyes in all senses, Matthew Gardiner’s production surpasses even the highest of expectations.
British Playwright Tim Crouch has tackled the tale of Macbeth’s friend and ultimate cohort with I, Banquo, a 40-minute one-man tour-de-force that is a dramatic retelling of the famous Scottish Play from the perspective of Banquo’s Ghost.
Monty Python’s Spamalot is a jubilant and genuinely hilarious touring rendition of the 2023 Broadway revival. If you’re looking for hearty laughs and a winning combo of slapstick humor, witty pop culture, and musical theater references, Spamalot’s got it in spades.
