Chita Rivera and Rita Moreno to Play Tilles Center, 4/24 & 5/1
Broadway ledgends Chita Rivera and Rita Moreno will be appearing at the Tilles Center for seperate but consective engagements in the upcoming weeks. Moreno will grace the Tilles stage on April 24, while Rivera will present her 'Chita Rivera: My Broadway' show on May 1.
'Chita Rivera: My Broadway' will be presented by the Long Island Philharmonic on Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 8:00 pm. An evening of music with two-time Tony Award winner Chita Rivera performing songs from her legendary Broadway career in her own concert Chita Rivera: MY BROADWAY. Ms. Rivera is joined by members of the Long Island Philharmonic and will perform selections from her most celebrated musicals, including numbers from West Side Story ("America"), Sweet Charity ("Where Am I Going?" and "Big Spender"), Chicago ("All That Jazz" and "Nowadays"), Kiss of the Spider Woman, Bye, Bye, Birdie and The Rink, and featuring the music of Leonard Bernstein, John Kander & Fred Ebb, Charles Strouse, Stephen Sondheim and Cy Coleman.
On Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 7:30 pm & 9:30 pm Rita Moreno, the only female performer to have won the Oscar, the Emmy, the Tony and the Grammy, will perform at Tilles. She has, in fact been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for this achievement. She earned the Oscar for her performance as Anita in the 1962 motion picture, West Side Story, the two Emmys for her 1977 appearance on The Muppet Show, and for a dramatic guest appearance on The Rockford Files in 1978. She won the Tony for her 1975 triumph on Broadway as Googie Gomez in The Ritz, the Grammy for her 1972 performance on The Electric Company Album for children, which was based on the long running television show of the same name.
Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, on the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University in Brookville, is Long Island's premier concert hall. Under the leadership of Executive Director Elliott Sroka, the 2009-10 season begins with an opening night performance of Broadway superstar Bernadette Peters, in concert with full orchestra on October 3.
