Review: RYAN HARMON at Crosswoods in Clarksville
American Idol alum gears up for ACMAs
When the Arkansas Country Music Awards take over Reynolds Performance Hall in Conway on Monday, June 1, one nominee who has certainly earned his place among Arkansas country music's elite is Ryan Harmon. Nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year, Harmon represents everything fans love about country music: genuine storytelling, powerful vocals, humility, and a knack for making every audience feel like they're part of the show. After recently seeing him perform live in Clarksville, I can confidently say that I am Ryan Harmon's newest #1 fan! His combination of talent and charisma made an immediate impression, and it is easy to understand why audiences across Arkansas continue to embrace him.

Awards and accolades are wonderful, but what makes Harmon special is his ability to connect with people. Over the years, he has steadily built a reputation as one of Arkansas's most respected performers, earning fans the old-fashioned way—one song, one stage, and one audience at a time.
Harmon is no stranger to the Arkansas Country Music Awards. In 2022, he was honored as Acoustic Act of the Year, recognition that highlighted his incredible ability to command a stage with little more than a guitar and a microphone. While many artists rely on elaborate productions, Harmon proves that great songs and genuine talent are often all that is needed to captivate an audience.

His versatility as a performer is equally impressive. Throughout his career, Harmon has entertained audiences alongside an eclectic range of artists, from Grand Ole Opry member Chris Janson to legendary hard rock band SteelHeart, and Harmon's reach extends far beyond Arkansas stages. In March 2020, the singer-songwriter found himself in the national spotlight when he auditioned for Season 3 of ABC's American Idol. Performing his original song, "I Knew This Would Happen," Harmon immediately caught the attention of viewers with his country-soul songwriting and relatable delivery. The audition quickly became an internet sensation, generating nearly 20 million views across the show's official social media platforms. Fans flooded the comments with support, many echoing the advice offered by judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan, who encouraged Harmon to focus his talents on Nashville rather than Hollywood.

I recently had the opportunity to see Harmon perform at Crosswoods Restaurant in Clarksville, and seeing him live only reinforced everything that makes him deserving of this nomination. There was no backing band, no flashy lighting package, and no elaborate production. It was simply Harmon and his guitar, yet he managed to hold the attention of everyone in the restaurant from the first song to the final note.
One of Harmon's greatest assets is his voice. Ryan possesses a sexy, soulful deep voice that immediately commands attention the moment he starts singing. There is a richness and warmth to his sound that wraps around a lyric and draws listeners into the story. Whether he is singing an original or a beloved country standard, his vocals have a way of making you melt.

My starry-heart eyes moment came when Harmon graciously took my request and performed "Slow Hand," the classic hit made famous by Conway Twitty. Friends, I was swooning. "Slow Hand" already carries a certain charm, but hearing it delivered through Harmon's deep, rugged vocals was something special. He sang it with confidence, charisma, and just enough swagger to make a girl blush. By the end of the song, I was convinced he could probably sing a restaurant menu and make it sound irresistable.
What struck me throughout the evening was how naturally he engaged with the audience. Harmon welcomed requests, shared stories, and created an atmosphere that felt warm and personal, and that ability to create a connection is what separates good performers from great ones. Harmon doesn't simply sing songs; he engages his audience. Also, that boy can pick a guitar!!

The Male Vocalist of the Year category is one of the most competitive races at this year's Arkansas Country Music Awards, but Harmon's nomination feels particularly fitting, and as fans gather at Reynolds Performance Hall on June 1 to celebrate the best in Arkansas country music, Ryan Harmon will undoubtedly be one of the artists worth watching. Whether he leaves with the trophy or not, his impact on the Arkansas music scene is already undeniable.
