How appropriate is it that the musical version of “Beetlejuice” should materialize at Starlight Theatre on the cusp of the Halloween and just before of the Mexican “Day of the Dead?” Our Starlight audience loved it! Beetlejuice is a show that screams for “Dad” jokes or other …
If laughter is truly the best medicine, the women of Eden Falls, Georgia, have opened exactly the right kind of health spa. “The Hallelujah Girls,” is a fast-moving Southern comedy by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten. The play is an affectionate, fast-moving celebration of friends…
It had taken me a day or two to absorb Jonathan Spector’s Eureka Day both well-acted and well-produced by Kansas City Actor’s Theatre in the City Theatre space of Union Station. Cleverly cloaked in comedy, this 2025 Tony Award Winner strikes a deeply held cultural belief from playwright Jonath…
Disney’s Newsies does not merely seize the day. It dances on it, vaults over it and occasionally executes a backflip before the day knows what struck it. It takes an 1899 historical event as a jumping off place and imagines the history as it might have been retold in a 1930’s Busby Berkeley movi…
Kansas City Repertory Theater’s new production of “Come From Away” is top notch in every possible way. “Come From Away” is about how one remote Canadian town rallied in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America to embrace neighbors they could not have imagined th…
A contemporary rock opera reimagines a familiar biblical story as a thrilling exploration of faith, fame, loyalty, doubt, and political power—proving this timeless tale still resonates with urgent relevance today.…
“The Shark Is Broken” is a fascinating invite into a hidden world that informs us how the sausage gets made when it comes to mega-hit films. This play snickers as three famous actors suffer “slings and arrows” while Bruce, a damned mechanical shark, turns turtle repeatedly during filming “…
Musical theater reviewers infrequently and pleasantly rediscover an old friend. “Wicked,” just opened at the venerable, 2400 seat Kansas City Music Hall with a recently refreshed cast, is an entertaining example.…
The year is 1905. The place is New York City. The play is Lynn Nottage’s intimate and surprisingly affective comedy/drama “Intimate Apparel.” “Intimate Apparel” tells a tale drawn from Nottage’s own passed down ancestry stories and perhaps a little imagined history. The inspiration i…
The current national tour of Monty Python's Spamalot opened at Starlight Theatre on Tuesday evening August 4, for a weeklong residency. This is my first exposure to this joyful send-up of all things musical theatre, motion pictures, vaudeville, and puppetry. Can you say” inspired silliness?”…
