by Marisela Treviño Orta

Two sisters in a Brazilian fishing village struggle to find their own happily-ever-after while bound to family honor and tradition. Helena is in love with her sister Belmira’s betrothed; meanwhile Belmira only wants to escape the Amazonian river life for an exciting adventure in the city. Days before the wedding, a mysterious stranger is pulled from the river, offering a tantalizing future that may change both their lives. Brazilian folklore and lyrical storytelling combine to weave a magical tale of love, fate and transformation.

BWW Review: THE RIVER BRIDE Refashions the Fairy Tale at Stages Repertory Theatre
BWW Review: THE RIVER BRIDE Refashions the Fairy Tale at Stages Repertory Theatre
January 30, 2019

As a part of Stages Repertory Theatre's 2nd Annual Sin Muros: A Latinx Theatre Festival, Marisela Treviño Orta's The River Bride is composed of an entirely Latinx cast. Orta's play is based on the style of folk tales and the real-life freshwater river dolphins--the "boto".  Her work certainly reads with a mystical vibe and mythical undertones, and it is no surprise that she has a background in poetry.

Stages Repertory Theatre Frequently Asked Questions FAQ

Stages Repertory Theatre is at 800 Rosine Street, Houston, TX.

Founded in 1978, Stages makes plays and tells stories that invite everyone to live more deeply and love more boldly. The common link throughout our work is a focus on sharing compelling human stories in intimate performance spaces that allow audiences to connect with both the art on stage and the people who help create it. Stages has grown to become Houston’s sixth largest nonprofit performing arts producer overall, and the largest outside of Houston’s downtown theater district. Stages is one of the region’s leading artistic employers, producing an average of 12 productions per year totaling more than 430 performances and welcoming 75,000+ visitors each season. In January 2020, Stages opened The Gordy, a new $35.4 million three-theater venue that will transform how Houston artists and audiences experience theater.
