Join Brazosport Center Stages this fall for “The Lilies of the Field,” a timeless story based on the novel by William E. Barrett and directed by Cindy Gernand.
ABOUT THE SHOW:
After being discharged from the Army, Homer Smith sets out across the country in his station wagon, stopping along the way to take odd jobs. His travels bring him to a remote valley in the Southwest, where he meets a group of nuns.
Homer agrees to help repair their leaky roof, planning to collect his pay and move on. But after sharing a meal with the nuns, he finds himself staying a little longer…and becoming more involved in their lives. He teaches them English, helps with errands, brings food to their table and becomes part of their dream of building a chapel.
What begins as a simple job becomes something much more meaningful as Homer and the nuns face challenges, discover unexpected friendships and learn the power of faith, generosity and community.
The motion picture version of this touching, warmly humorous story won international acclaim and brought Sidney Poitier the Academy Award as best actor for his portrayal of Homer Smith.
