Mexican-American composer Nathan Felix will present his new immersive opera titled La Gran Esperanza at the Blaffer Art Museum (4173 Elgin St) on Saturday October 10th at 3pm. La Gran Esperanza, sung in Spanish is a short opera exploring themes of hope, cultural identity, and the search for belonging. This unconventional work will be written and directed by Mitchell Center Visiting Artist Nathan Felix, inviting audiences into an intimate, site-responsive operatic experience.
For one performance only, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts presents an original immersive opera in partnership with acclaimed composer Nathan Felix. Known for his groundbreaking immersive operas, Felix brings his signature blend of historical depth and contemporary urgency to this new work. Through this exclusive performance, Felix tells a story loosely inspired by former MLB player, Freddie Benavidez, who inspired and gave hope to a generation of Hispanic youth searching for belonging and cultural identity in the border town of Laredo Texas. Benavides is widely regarded as the first professional athlete from Laredo. Vocalists and musicians perform live throughout the museum, surrounding audiences with sound, guiding them through the performance, and making visitors part of the experience.
The idea behind Felix’s immersive opera is similar to a flash mob as it revolves around blurring the line between performer and audience by having musical performers move amongst the audience as they perform a cohesive musical composition. The audience is encouraged to follow the narrative of the piece which entails following the soloists but they are ultimately given agency to explore based on feeling, sight and soundscape. La Gran Esperanza will feature some of the area's brightest young opera artists such as Sarah Dyer-Jones (Mezzo) and three singers in the Moores School of Music opera program; Joshua Thomas (Baritone), Julia Starr (Soprano) and Jonatán Reyes (Tenor).
