Hobby Center Reorganizes Pit to Accomodate SOUND OF MUSIC

The production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC currently playing at the Hobby Center in Houston has made use of their pit in a way that may surprise audiences. Instead of placing the orchestra in the pit, the Hobby Center has instead chosen to pipe in the music, using the pit area to aid in scene changes and allow some of the more intimate scenes to be played more downstage than a pit would have allowed.

Director Roy Hamlin feels that the placement of the orchestra doesnt change the overall composition of the music. "Having the orchestra "piped in" doesn't make the music sound any less live."

Seven rambunctious children and the most irreverent nun ever to kick a habit lend their playfulness to the holidays at Theatre Under The Stars, welcoming your family into theirs, with The Sound Of Music.. The final musical written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, The Sound Of Music is based on the 1949 memoir of Maria von Trapp, "The True Story Of The Trapp Family Singers," which follows the Trapp family as they leave Austria to escape Nazi persecution. In 1956, a German film documenting the family's tale was released, sparking plans for a stage version by American TV and Broadway producer/director Vincent Donehue who envisioned a feature role for theatre star Mary Martin. Just three short years later, The Sound of Music opened to rave reviews on Broadway with a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse and music and lyrics by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.

Founded in 1968, Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) is Houston's acclaimed non-profit musical theatre company and is currently under the direction of President and CEO John C. Breckenridge.
