Society for the Performing Arts (SPA), Houston's leading performing arts presenter, launches its Satellite Series at Space Center Houston in March. Performances will include Blue Lapis Light from Austin on Friday, March 22, and Saturday, March 23, at 12 and 1:30 p.m. Boomshaka, from Chicago, will take the stage for three performances on Friday, March 29, at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Blue Lapis Light is a site-specific aerial dance company founded by Artistic Director, Sally Jacques in 2005. The Company's mission is to create transcendent works of beauty, without religious denomination, as prayers for the planet. Using aerial techniques informed by classical, interpretive and modern dance, Blue Lapis Light is committed to challenging physical limitations and inspiring audiences with a sense of wonder. The Company seeks to transform urban environments into inspired works of art, creating beauty that transcends space in their expansiveness, connecting us to a sense of wonder, possibility, and hope. The company's name draws from Ghandi's description of a meditation practice, wherein the soul merges with Eternal consciousness taking the form of blue light.
Written, directed, and produced by students of Northwestern University, Boomshaka has established a reputation for consistently delivering energetic and inspiring performances. The Company combines such dance styles as hip-hop and tap with various forms of percussion, using everything from sticks, poles, and buckets - to our hands and feet. The young performers come from a variety of backgrounds and have a range of artistic expertise, from classical music composition and formal dance training to free style rapping and break dancing.
These performances are included with daily admission to Space Center Houston, located at 1601 NASA Parkway, Houston, TX 77058. To purchase tickets, please visit www.spacecenter.org. Hours of operation are 10a.m.-5 p.m. daily and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on weekends. More information may be found at spahouston.org.
