The mysterious atmosphere of an empty stage at a late hour unites spectators and actors in the appropriate ambience for Jean Cocteau's puzzling, dream-like narrative from the year 1929, set to music by the famous American composer Philip Glass, who long ago employed his motoric, hypnotic music to smash through the boundaries – absurd in any case – between serious and entertaining music. His works are played in the greatest opera houses of the world while equally being a part of pop culture. And his numerous soundtracks (for films including The Truman Show and The Hours) also make his work familiar to movie-goers.

Paul and Elisabeth, brother and sister, live in a world of their own, withdrawn from everyday life, and the "game" they play shifts their fantasy existence increasingly away from reality. If either of them attempts to escape from the prison they have created for themselves they are thwarted by the resistance the other person mounts. Elizabeth's fiancé Michael dies in a car crash, and she rejects the attention of Gérard. When Paul falls in love with Agathe, Elisabeth weaves a web of lies that suffocates any chance of a relationship between them. Or could it be that the other characters are merely expressions of Paul and Elisabeth's imagination, part of their "game"? Les Enfants terribles reveals to us that the creative power of the imagination can have a devastating, destructive effect, as inescapable as Philip Glass’s music for singer and three pianos, which is constantly propelled onwards and never stands still.
