BROTHERS AND SISTERS to Play at Deutsches National Theater
By: Alan Henry
Brothers and Sisters will play at Deutsches National Theater on Nov. 9, 2019.
Papa didn't work for the Stasi! This is something all three siblings, Erik, Matti and Britta, can agree on. Yet the question remains - who was Papa really?
Birk Meinhardt's story about the Werchow family begins in 1973 in the Thuringian town of Gerberstedt and finds its conclusion in the new millennium. The major and minor events in these decades have left their imprint on the lives of the protagonists. First, there is the father Willy, director of a state-run printing company who loses his way in systemic compromises and eventually stands atop the rubble of what used to be his principles. And then there are his children, the conformist Erik who means to follow in his father's footsteps in obedience to authority; the rebellious Matti who is convinced he's the only one who knows the truth; and Britta whose general lack of ambition initially leads her to the circus. They all witness the collapse of their country and must find their place in the new, larger and unfamiliar state structure of what is now a united Germany.
The author Christian Tschirner has adapted the history of Werchow family for the DNT, and Hasko Weber will present the stage adaptation on time for the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
