Theatre de la Ville Presents Bouli Annee Zero, Sept. 30 - Oct. 15

By:

From 30 September to 15 October 2010 Theatre de la Ville will present Bouli Année Zéro by Fabrice Melquiot.  The production will be directed by Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota.

Before he became a teenager in love with Petula, Bouli Miro was a desired and expected baby. Just like everyone else in fact. But then again...

After the success of Wanted Petula, Bouli Miro is back at the Théatre de la Ville to assert his status of mascot of the young and old. Last season, a number of you followed Bouli's quest to find his cousin Petula. As a valiant knight, he went all the way to the cosmos to look for her and met people hardly ever encountered on earth, among whom were a giant flea, Neil Armstrong and the Little Prince. "This new episode goes back to the origins of the saga: Mama Binocla's womb. Because after having met with Sharon Stone, Sigmund Freud and Neil Armstrong, being confronted to his parents' divorce and crossing the galaxy, Bouli wanted to be given some explanation about his birth. How was he born? What sort of foetus was he? What did he think of before he was born? Was he right to feel safe? What is a shelter? Is one ever ready to confront the world? And how is a legend made? This new episode will be an opportunity to rediscover Daddi Rotondo and Mama Binocla, Petula, Jean-Michel and Marie-Jeanne Clark, and new characters as well, such as Crazy Bertha and Günther the Rhino." Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota actually suggested to Fabrice Melquiot that he should imagine the year zero, go back to the sources, in a way, of the adventure. In TV shows this is called a "prequel": what happened before. A sudden bout of rationality is not to be feared though. If there is but one adult perfectly attuned to children's peculiar logic, the way they apprehend reality and make it enter their imagination, then that is Fabrice Melquiot. "We wanted the company to play together again, to dance and sing as they celebrate the hero's birth. Indeed, we dream of a show which brings adults, teenagers and children together, a show one would be invited to with a birth announcement card rather than a simple card. It will be the (re)birth of Bouli. As if it were the first time."

Remarks recorded by Colette Godard

Together, we will be trying to create a theatre meant for children and that adults can see, without sacrificing to the need for text, without losing sight of our desire for a scenic language appealing to everyone's ability to imagine. We now want to get children to discover a place in their hometown where theatre is made, to try and get them to marvel at it, to provide a magical and unforgettable moment. Finally, in the presence of children, our initial utopia will just become reality.
