SEEKING

:

Notes: All roles are open to all ethnicities as well as non-binary and all gender identities.

[MARY LENNOX] Female, 10 - 13 years old. A survivor. The child of a privileged woman and an affectionate but ineffectual father, she is abandoned in the ultimate way - through the death of her family. Thrust into a new and equally lonely world – she finds an inner strength, wit, joy and compassion. A stubborn, intelligent, sensitive, funny, charming child. A pure, unchanged girl soprano. Standard English accent (Vocal Range Ab3-D5)

[LILY CRAVEN] Female, late 20s - 40s (but ageless in a sense). Colin’s mother, Archibald’s wife. A spirit, frozen in time. Her energy winds through and pervades the play. She struggles to reach those she loves to heal and nurture. She is the essence of forgiveness and compassion. An ethereal soprano, her voice reflects the spirit within. Standard English accent. (Vocal Range Bb3-D6)

[ARCHIBALD CRAVEN] Male, 30s - early 50s. Sensitive and tortured by the loss of his young wife, Archie has walled himself off from the world and lives with his memories, grief and guilt. He is convinced he brings harm to those he loves but is still possessed of wit and warmth. Ultimately an appealing, charismatic, charming man crippled more by grief than physical impediment. Standard English accent. Broadway baritone. (Vocal range C3-A4)

[DR. NEVILLE CRAVEN] Male, early 30s - early 50s. The second son. Overlooked and resentful. Historically second to Archibald, both in love and position. He has become hardened and bitter. His natural attractiveness and charm hide the malice underneath. Like everyone in the story, maintains a deep core of humanity which makes him redeemable. Standard English accent. A remarkable Broadway baritone. (Vocal Range C3-F#4)

[MRS. MEDLOCK] Female, 40s -50s. Saddled with the running of a great house without direction, she sees the young people in her charge as burdens. Stern and direct, she isn’t heartless, but is of the “children should be seen and not heard” mindset. Practical and wry. Speaks with a Yorkshire accent. Strong character who sings. (Vocal range G3 – B4)

[MARTHA] Female, 20s-30s. Simple, direct, wry, frank and honest. A housemaid in the house, she is wise and deeply invested in the care of the people with whom she has been charged. She is nurturing and caring. Speaks with a Yorkshire accent. Has an excellent belt. (Vocal Range G3-D5)

[DICKON] Male, 20s. Magical. Raised on the moors, respectful and caring for the natural world around him, he has a unique ability to communicate with the earth and its inhabitants. A very old soul. He can conjure. Speaks with a Yorkshire accent. Excellent tenor. (Vocal Range D3 - G4)

[BEN WEATHERSTAFF] Male, 40s – 60s. A gardener. Ben is bristly and has an extremely dry sense of humor. He doesn’t suffer fools. Loyal to a fault, his rough exterior hides a big heart Speaks with a Yorkshire accent. A strong character who sings. (Vocal Range E3-D#4)

[COLIN CRAVEN] Male, 10-13 years old. Bedridden and convinced of his own imminent mortality (because everyone tells him he is fragile, frail and dying). He is as isolated as Mary and even more poorly parented. Colin has discovered the only path to attention is through tantrums and imperiousness - but he is a child still. Curious, sensitive, resilient and, though desperate for affection, capable of great joy and wonder. Standard English accent. Good singer. (Vocal Range A3-E5)

[ROSE LENNOX] Female, 30s-40s (but ageless in a sense). Mary’s mother and Lily’s sister. A pampered, beautiful, narcissistic socialite. In life, she is unable to see past herself to the welfare of those around her. Standard English accent. (Vocal Range A3-D6)

[FAKIR] Male, south Asian, 20s-30s. Strong high tenor. A spirit of the past from India. Mysterious and magical. (Vocal Range C3-B4). This track will understudy DICKON.
