BREAKDOWN

The Excavation of Mary Anning

The Excavation of Mary Anning is, conceptually-speaking: a company of modern-day players coming together to tell a 19th century story. We are hoping to build an ensemble that reflects the diversity of 21st century America and not 19th century Southwest England.

Every actor in the play, except for the actor playing Mary, takes on many roles and changes from role-to-role by changing dialect. We view the character and dialect switching in this play as an opportunity to celebrate 6 extraordinarily virtuosic actors who are all heavily featured. Accordingly, we are looking for actors who ideally, have strong dialect work (particularly British dialects) in their toolboxes. That said, dialect coaching will be a major part of our process, so actors of all experience levels are encouraged to submit.

The characters in The Excavation of Mary Anning are 6 female-identifying actors and/or actors who are comfortable with femme presentation to play 26 different roles.

[MARY] Any ethnicity, mid - late 20s. Possessing an intense focus and sense of determination. Rough around the edges, not a traditional ingenue, and unlikeable at times. If she's any sort of Disney princess, it's Merida from Brave. (Although she's really not a Disney princess, nor is she Kate Winslet in Ammonite).

[MOLLY] Any ethnicity, 50s-60s. Broad comedic chops. Able to transform from effervescent to downtrodden. Joanna Lumley-type, with a cockney spin. For Molly, think the Beggar Woman from Sweeney Todd; for Roderick, think a militaristic John Cleese from Monty Python.

[BUCKLAND] Any ethnicity, 50s-60s. Broad comedic chops. Warm, affable, excitable. Possessing great heart and parental instinct, although not the brightest crayon in the box. Not without a healthy dose of ambition. Miriam Margolyes-type.

[TRAY] Any ethnicity, 10-13. Precocious, curious, adorable. Loyal to a fault, but also willful, and a little bit destructive.

[ELIZABETH] Any ethnicity, late 20s-early 30s. A little older than Mary. Gentle but firm; able to take control of a room, or cede it. Level-headed, cool, but not dispassionate; Mary’s equal in authenticity. For Elizabeth, think Mary Poppins with common sense; for the Plesiosaur, think Scar from The Lion King.

[HENRY] Any ethnicity, mid to late 30s. Character actress who can really wrap an audience around her finger. For Henry, a nervous Hugh Grant in Four Weddings and a Funeral; for Cuvier, the confidence of Pepe Le Pew; for Charlotte, the charm and wit of a Jane Austen heroine.
