[JOHN PROCTOR]
(Male, Mid-30s, African American) New England farmer; working man. “Even-tempered and not easily led, but he does not suffer fools or hypocrites. He is remorseful for his affair with Abigail, but unapologetic about other actions some deem un-Christian. At his core he is an honest man who chooses truth over his reputation and life. Powerful, masculine, sexy, potent. Must be physically fit, excellent with language, classically trained.
[ELIZABETH PROCTOR]
(Female, Late 20s-Early 30s, Any Ethnicity other than Cauacasian) Takes pride in fulfilling her role as John’s wife, and does it well. She is reserved, and faithful. Described by others as cold, but is actually cleared-eyed with great wells of emotion and strength. She truly loves her husband and finds herself conflicted by the position in which his actions, and those of the town, have placed her.
[ABIGAIL WILLIAMS]
(Female, 17, Any Ethnicity) Reverend Parris' orphaned niece. Formerly the Proctors' maid. She had an affair with John Proctor and will do anything to be with him. Strikingly beautiful…with an endless capacity for dissembling.
[DEPUTY GOVENOR DANFORTH]
(Male, 60s, Any Ethnicity/Asian/Latino Preferred) High-status, sophisticated. Adheres acutely to the letter of the law, and in so doing guards ignorance. Must be commanding, with a powerful voice, and excellent with language.
[THOMAS PUTNAM]
(Male, Late 40’s-Early50’s, Any Ethnicity) A well-to-do, hard-handed land-owner. High-status, litigious, vengeful. Claims Giles Corey is trying to steal his land.
[GILES COREY]
(Male, 83, Any Ethnicity) A farmer, knotted with muscle, canny, inquisitive, and still powerful. Not afraid to argue against authority. Chooses being pressed to death with stones over backing down from his conviction.
[FRANCIS NURSE]
(Male, 70s, Any Ethnicity) Husband to Rebecca. A very good man, well-liked and respected by all; someone for whom both sides of the argument had to have respect. Principled; risks arrest to argue that the girls are frauds.
[TITUBA]
(Female, 40s, Any Ethnicity other than Caucasian) A slave brought from Barbados by Parris. A powerful, charismatic, mysterious woman who does potions and other folk ‘magic.’ Responds to accusations against her by claiming to have seen and rebuked the Devil, and accuses others of having colluded with Him to save herself.
[REBECCA NURSE]
(Female, Late 60’s-Early 70’s, Any Ethnicity) Wife of Francis Nurse. A deeply-loved community member. Thoughtful and reasonable; a peacemaker renowned for her kindness. Gentleness exudes from her.
