Breakdown
HENRY CREEL
Age: 14–16. Male. White.
A high school freshman. Henry is a natural born loner hiding a terrible secret, but though evil lurks within him, so does the spirit of the boy he once was. Curious, savagely loyal, and above all, desperate for connection. He is caught in the middle, locked in a battle for his own soul. Henry Creel is a key character in the show. Has depth and authenticity.
PATTY NEWBY
Age: 14–16. Female. Black or mixed raced.
A high school freshman. Between bullies at school and her oppressive father, she has developed a quick wit and a thick skin, but dreams of escaping her small town.
JOYCE MALDONADO
Age: 17–18. Female. White.
Joyce is a teenage slacker who in all things dances to the beat of her own drum. Some might call her chaotic, but the truth is she outgrew school long ago. That is until, on the verge of graduating, she realizes she can use school to help her escape her small town. Sarah knows her own mind and has an authority built on not caring if she fits in. She knows she’s destined for bigger things, but fears this might be her last chance to break free.
JAMES HOPPER JR.
Age: 17–18. Male. White.
He has a fractured relationship with his father and can’t wait to get out of his shadow and leave the small town he grew up in. Independent, often left to his own devices, he can come across as arrogant and cynical, and has plenty of girlfriends. An alpha male who has a good heart underneath.
BOB NEWBY
Age: 17–18. Male. White.
Bob is a good and very smart student. A sheltered teenager, he has a natural earnestness and naivety. Less experience around girls. Never lacking in enthusiasm, and a real sound geek, Bob is particularly passionate and proud of his role as a DJ.
DR BRENNER
Age: Late 20s–30s. Male. White.
A senior research scientist who’s obsessive in his pursuit of scientific progress. He’s a game player — a chess master if you will — who’s always striving to be two steps ahead. Comes across as calm, collected, and sometimes remote though with a paternal charisma.
PRINCIPAL NEWBY
Age: 40s–early 50s. Male. White.
The local high school's principal. He served in WWII. He's a pillar of morality within the community. He’s somewhat oppressive, dogmatic and god-fearing, but has a charisma that’s made him a well-respected and trusted man.
VICTOR CREEL
Age: Late 30s–early 40s. Male. White.
Optimistic that a new start in a new small town will be different for him and his family. He drinks to medicate against mistakes of his past that continue to haunt him.
VIRGINIA CREEL
Age: Late 30s–early 40s. Female. White.
New to the town she’s desperate to fit in and appear normal. Uptight, anxious and controlling. She has an edge to her. Her husband’s turn to drink has left her even more isolated and desperate to connect with her children.
CHIEF HOPPER
Age: Mid/late 40s. Male. White.
Physically imposing, local community leader. Firmly entrenched in the small town he grew up in and the job he’s had for decades. Tired, impatient, volatile. Drinks too much. Difficult relationship with the next generation who he thinks are wasters, including his son.
LONNIE BYERS
Age: Early 20s. Male. White.
General waster. Lacking ambition, often hungover. Enjoys drinking and pranks and is just fine with how things are. A “bad boy” of sorts.
WALTER HENDERSON
Age: 14–16. Male. White.
A high school freshman. He's an outsider who's a bully to some and bullied by others. But he does have a girlfriend which he's very proud of. His family runs the local liquor store and with that comes a level of respect within the town.
ALAN MUNSON
Age: 14–15. Male. White.
Bit of a misfit. Humor is derived from how seriously he takes things. He’s wholly committed to the pursuit being authentic — even to the point of ridiculousness.
CHARLES SINCLAIR
Age: 17–18. Male. Black.
Athletic and smart, on the high school football team but not your typical jock. Assured, enthusiastic and earnest but not overly confident.
TED WHEELER
Age: 17–18. Male. White.
Sportsman and very proud of it. Not the brightest spark, but is popular, a jock, athletic, enjoys his muscles, sport and impressing the girls.
SUE ANDERSON
Age: 17–18. Female. Black.
Sharp and quick-thinking, direct, clear, with formidable organization skills — she basically runs everything. No-nonsense, loyal and smart.
KAREN CHILDRESS
Age: 17–18. Female. White.
High school cheerleader, not the smartest student, but never lacking in confidence. She’s fun and always gives everything 100%. Knows what she wants, is popular with the boys and enjoys it.
CLAUDIA HENDERSON
Age: 17–18. Female. White.
A good student, keen, earnest and smart. Not one of the cool kids. Loves animals. A lot.
ALICE CREEL
Age: 10–11. Female. White.
The youngest of two children, and her family have just moved from the desert to a beautiful big old house in this small town in the Midwest. She’s excited about their new home and new life here. She loves cute animals.
