BREAKDOWN

DEANIE -- African-American woman (18 - 35 years old). A woman of elegance and wisdom belying her age.

JIM STEWART – Caucasian man (30 - 45 years old). He is the owner of Stax records, but a country fiddle player at heart. A straight shooter with big dreams, an open-mind and huge heart.

ESTELLE AXTON -- Caucasian woman (35 - 55 years old). Co-owner of the company with her brother, Jim. Everyone’s mama-bear. A no-nonsense boss. Smart and instinctive.

DAVID PORTER (MAY DOUBLE AS JOHNNIE TAYLOR) -- African-American man (18 - 30 years old). Songwriter. A sweet, earnest, and straight-laced choir-boy. Very intelligent. As JOHNNIE TAYLOR – a slick, sleek and sexy singer.

STEVE CROPPER -- Caucasian man (18 - 35 years old). Guitar player and songwriter. A white southern boy with an intense love of soul music. He is dedicated and determined. A natural leader.

BOOKER T. JONES (COULD DOUBLE AS JOHNNIE TAYLOR AND/OR WILSON PICKETT) -- African-American man (18 - 25 years old). Piano player. A boy-ish musical prodigy. Leader of the house band. Young, capable and cocky. As JOHNNIE TAYLOR – a slick, sleek and sexy singer. As WILSON PICKETT – a dynamic, arrogant performer.

RUFUS THOMAS -- African-American man (40 - 55 years old). Singer. Carla’s father. The ultimate performer and life of every party. An extremely colorful character whose feet never stop moving.

CARLA THOMAS -- African-American woman (18 - 35 years old). Singer. Flirty and sexy. Knows the power she has over men while remaining doe-eyed and innocent. Her voice at times can be both sweet and seductive. (Also doubles as one of the Staple Singers).

DONALD DUCK DUNN -- Caucasian man (20 - 35 years old). Bass player. Heavy southern accent. The class clown. Everyone’s friend.

AL JACKSON JR. -- African-American man (25 - 40 years old). The typical drummer in every sense. Keeps everyone on time, literally and figuratively. A quiet confidence. Soul music is in his blood.

AL BELL -- African-American man (25 - 45 years old). Head of the company. Former disc-jockey. He’s a sharp, quick-tongued salesman. An incredible motivator and a positive, forward-thinking innovator. A giant, dominant presence.

OTIS REDDING/JOHNNY BAYLOR – African-American man (20s). Otis is a singer. Musical genius, but a big, affable, teddy bear. Just a young southern boy at heart. He is the star of the company, loved by everyone. Doubles as JOHNNY BAYLOR (30s) – Head of security. A tough, no-nonsense enforcer. A bit of a thug.

ISAAC HAYES -- African-American man (25 - 35 years old). Singer and songwriter. Coolest, most stylish man on the planet. Bald, sexy, and exudes confidence.

JERRY WEXLER – Caucasian man (40s). A ruthless, New York corporate business man.

EDDIE FLOYD, DON DAVIS, and JESSE JACKSON – African-American man (25 – 40 years old). Vibrant, smooth and inspirational.

MAVIS STAPLES – African-American woman (30s or 40s). Singer. A big, powerful, textured voice. A woman with a strong sense of self.

POPS STAPLES/MR. BAILEY – African-American man (35 - 50 years old). Pops is the deep, soulful guitarist and singer of The Staple Singers. Sings lead on “Respect Yourself.” MR. BAILEY is the warm, gregarious owner of the Lorraine Motel.

FEMALE ENSEMBLE – African-American woman (20s-40s). Singer. Versatile singing voice. Sings MABLE JOHN, JEAN KNIGHT, LINDA LYNDELL. (Also doubles as one of the Staple Singers).

MALE ENSEMBLE – African-American man (20s-40s). Singer. Versatile singing voice. Plays multiple roles and requires a transformative character actor.

ADDITIONAL ENSEMBLE - Horn Player #1 and #2, Sanitation Worker #1 and #2, Doorman, DJ, Host #1, Host #2, Announcer, Reporter, Kid, Suit, Gunman #1, Gunman #2, Musician #1, Musician #2, Pretty Lady, Lawyer, Federal Marshall. Please note any instruments actor plays in the submission.
