BREAKDOWN

[ROMEO] He/him. 18+ to play late teens. A young man of some privilege, close friends with the family of the local government. Deeply feeling, with a flair for the dramatic. Addicted to his phone but capable of surprising maturity and poise when he puts it away. When the play begins, he is in love with the idea of being in love with his crush Rosaline, who refuses to have sex with him. Attentions shift quickly to Juliet, whom he falls hopelessly in love with.

[JULIET] She/her. 18+ to play late teens. A teenager whose family wants to marry into politics. Witty, passionate and independent-minded, she initially resists marrying, but her attitude changes when she falls in love with Romeo. A better natural poet than Romeo but finds his hyperbolic tendencies charming.

[FRIAR LAWRENCE] He/him. 40s-60s. A local priest who acts as a father figure to the local youth, and knows much more about the younger generation than their own parents do. Attempts to counsel the two young lovers and also seeks to use their elopement to bring peace between the two warring families. Kind and wise, a vegetarian and lover of plants.

[NURSE] She/her. 30s-50s. Nurse who acts as a mother figure to Juliet. Affectionate, funny, serious when it concerns the safety of Juliet.

[MERCUTIO] Any pronouns. 20s-30s. As a relative of the Prince, this is a privileged young person, slightly older than Romeo and Benvolio, and a questionable influence. Mischievous, capable of cruelty and real misogyny--a bit of an incel/edgelord. Mercutio's death changes everything.

[TYBALT] He/him. 20s. Juliet's cousin. Very close to Lady Capulet. Hot headed, impulsive, always itching for a fight with the Montagues.

[BENVOLIO] Any pronouns. 20s. A Montague and close friend of Romeo and Mercutio. Kind and level headed, Benvolio is an elder sibling figure to Romeo, giving council and protecting him.

[LORD CAPULET] He/him. 40-50s. Head of the Capulet house and father of Juliet. Politically ambitious and eager to show off his family's status. Protective of his daughter but also temperamental, capable of physical violence to family members.

[LADY CAPULET] She/her. 30s-40s. Wife of Lord Capulet and mother of Juliet. Considerably younger than her husband. Unsure of her abilities as a mother, concerned with social appearances, and ill-equipped to stand against her husband.

[PARIS] He/him. A relative of the Prince. Good-looking and rich. Arranges a marriage to Juliet with her father, on the proviso that he can win her affections.

[PRINCE ESCALUS] Any pronouns. Governor of Verona, trying to keep the warring families at bay but seems incapable of diagnosing the problem. Opens and closes the play.
