SEEKING
comic actors who sing for a developmental production of CHRISTMAS EVE IN DIKANKA, an absurdist musical comedy based on Christmas Eve by Ukrainian writer Nikolai Gogol, to be performed at Theatre 154.SYNOPSIS
It's Christmas Eve in Dikanka, and a blacksmith must find fancy shoes like those worn by the Czarina in the next few hours or lose the heart of his lady love. But when the Devil comes to town, will he give up his soul for a sole? And what will he do about his mother, who is a promiscuous witch? No really, an actual witch. This loosely adapted take on Nikolai Gogol's story sets the show in a meta-theatrical universe which combines a Ukrainian 19th century absurdist tone and a modern sensibility, plus a lotta slapstick.
Actors of any ethnicity from all ends of the gender spectrum who sing and are strong with comedy are encouraged to submit.
SEEKING
SOLOKHA, 40s, Alto/Mezzo with a soprano extension. Self-assured, confident, warm and loving, can be sharp-tongued, matter-of-fact. Also happens to be a witch. May double as DEMON, COURTIER and CZARINA.
OKSANA, 20s, Soprano. A vain, pretentious young woman who's hot stuff. All the men are in love with her, and she knows it. A bit of an airhead, though she is convinced she is a strong female character. Comic skills more important than conventional good looks. May double as DEMON, PETITIONER and CZARINA.
NARRATOR, possibly 50s but very flexible, Baritenor with a warm, hearty voice that reminds you of the narrator from a Rankin Bass Christmas special. A strong character who doubles as multiple roles including PANAS, a shoemaker; CHUB, Oksana's nebbishy father; OSIP the pompous mayor; FATHER CHEREVIK, the priest; GUARD; COURTIER and possibly even the CZARINA.
VAKULA, 20s, Baritone. A blacksmith. Not conventionally attractive and very insecure about his looks. A hothead, quick to anger and resentment. His brows are always lowered, and he always suspects someone is making fun of him.
DEVIL, ageless, Tenor or Baritenor. Yes, that Devil. A devious schemer with a chip on his shoulder. Has a childish sense of grievance and is a bit whiny but in a funny way.
CZARINA, 40s, a regal figure with unexpected interests whose attitude can turn on a dime. She speaks in a rich tone with abrupt shifts from high to low registers. She's also a bit of a wiseass. Will be doubled by SOLOKHA, OKSANA or NARRATOR.
