BREAKDOWN

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

NOTE: Those submitting for CLAUDIO and/or BALTHASAR will be asked to sing at the audition.

Seeking:

Benedick: Age range: 30s-40s. Witty and opinionated, his outward self-confidence and bravado hide an inner insecurity and vulnerability. Can be charming or caustic, insensitive and, at moments, surprisingly caring. A person who comes with a good deal of baggage, but likeable all the same. His journey from cynicism to sincerity is central to the play. Any ethnicity. Has a strong command of language and comic skills.

Beatrice: Age range: 30s-40s. Witty, intelligent, fiercely independent. Can be charming and caring, but also caustic and dismissive. She masks vulnerability with sarcasm and brilliance. Can talk rings around anyone in the room. Her verbal sparring with Benedick hides a deep capacity for love. Any ethnicity. Has a strong command of language and comedic skills.

Don Pedro: Age range: 30s-40s. A nobleman and soldier. Wears his authority and status with ease. Intelligent, respected, and generous, though occasionally blind to nuance. Enjoys matchmaking and mischief. Any ethnicity.

Leonato: Age range: 50s-60s. Hero’s father, governor of Messina, and owner of Leonato’s restaurant. A gentleman with a strong connection to his community. Outgoing, socially adept, unassuming, good sense of humor; can also be passionate, fiery, and unforgiving. Has a deep sense of family honor. Any ethnicity.

Claudio: Age range: 20s. A soldier more comfortable in the company of men than women, a doer not a thinker, rash and impetuous, romantic but inexperienced in the ways of love, easily influenced. Sings well. Any ethnicity.

Hero: Age range: 20s. Intelligent and self-possessed, with a strong moral center. Pure of heart. She has great strength in the face of adversity. Any ethnicity.

Don John: Age range: 30s-40s. Half-brother of Don Pedro. Reads as a person of status. The villain. Deeply bitter, resentful, and jealous. He skillfully sows discord with subtlety and calculated malice. Doubles as the Sexton. Any ethnicity.

Sexton: Age range: 30s-40s. Doubles as Don John, so drawing a clear distinction between the two is essential. Knows the law and his job. Strives for efficiency with a desire to uncover the facts. Decisive. Impatient.

Borachio: Age range: 20s-40s. A soldier and Don John’s right-hand man. Opportunistic, manipulative, conniving, working class. A smarmy charmer and a drinker. Any ethnicity. Actor must be able to play one of the following instruments: Guitar, violin, mandolin, or accordion.

Dogberry: Age range: 30s-50s. Constable of the Watch. He mistakenly believes that he knows what he’s doing and that he’s the smartest person in the room. Verbose and prone to malapropisms. Demands and expects respect. His pride hides an inner insecurity and is easily punctured. In awe of true authority. Aspires to rise in class. Any ethnicity. NOTE: Requires physical comedy and character work.

Verges: Age range: 60s-70s. Dogberry’s sidekick. Devoted to him, though he may not always agree with or understand him. Has his own opinions and, out of enthusiasm, is not shy about expressing them. Civic-minded. Likes his job. Working class. Any ethnicity. Actor must be able to play one of the following instruments: Guitar, violin, mandolin, or accordion. NOTE: Role requires physical comedy and character work.

Conrade: Age range: 20s. A soldier and follower of Don John. Proud. Claims to be a gentleman by birth, though that claim may be questionable. Any ethnicity. Plays one of the following instruments: Guitar, violin, mandolin, or accordion.

Antonio: Age range: 60s. Leonato’s brother. Loves his family and will defend them to the death. Loyal. Plain spoken. Any ethnicity. Plays one of the following instruments: Guitar, violin, mandolin, or accordion.

Ursula: Age range: 20s. A natural confidant and helper. Up for any adventure. Fancies herself a very good actress. Any ethnicity. Strongly comedic.

Margaret: Age range: 20s-30s. Quick-witted, smart-mouthed, revels in her ability with language, especially witty barbs. Largely ignores social rules of status and will speak her mind to pretty much anyone. In love with Borachio. Unwittingly caught up in Don John’s scheme. Any ethnicity.

Balthasar: Age range: 20s. A good singer, though he claims the contrary. Awkward and insecure when it comes to wooing. Doubles as First Watchman. Any ethnicity. Plays one of the following instruments: Guitar, violin, mandolin, or accordion. Sings.

Messenger: A soldier. Doubles as Second Watchman (High Oatcake). Any ethnicity. Plays one of the following instruments: Guitar, violin, mandolin, or accordion.

Friar: Age range: 50s-60s. Grounded and level-headed. Thinks well under pressure. Compelling in his arguments. Doubles as Third Watchman (George Seacoal). Any ethnicity. Plays one of the following instruments: Guitar, violin, mandolin, or accordion.
