BREAKDOWN

MONTGOMERY - AN AMERICAN MUSICAL

Theatre Now, a non-profit organization dedicated to new musicals, is

SEEKING

actors who sing for a developmental workshop of MONTGOMERY: AN AMERICAN MUSICAL, an original dramatic musical focusing on Claudette Colvin and the Montgomery bus boycott, to be performed at ART/NY's Jeffrey & Paula Gural Theatre. Looking for flexible, collaborative performers. Performances will be on book to allow for changes during the process. Rehearsals will be held between the first and second weeks of performances.

SYNOPSIS

With a blues, gospel and rock-infused score, MONTGOMERY puts you on the ground at the birth of the Civil Rights Movement. In 1955 Alabama, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin is arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus. Civil rights leaders want to organize a city-wide bus boycott, but they fear Claudette is too young, too poor, and too dark-skinned to unite the community. When the mild-mannered, light-skinned Rosa Parks is arrested, the boycott is on, and Claudette is all but forgotten – until a new court case gives her one more chance to make history.

Partially based on Britt Bonney's interviews with Claudette Colvin, MONTGOMERY is the recipient of an America250 grant from the NEA and a Developmental Grant from the National Foundation for Musical Theatre.

Note: these roles are subject to change. These descriptions are of the characters, not necessarily the actors playing them. Additional doubling may occur.
