SEEKING:

  • [SOLOMON “SONNY” JASPER] Black, 60s, male-identifying, patriarch, a key figure in the student protest wing of the American civil rights movement who went on to become a highly visible politician, spokesman, and religious leader during the latter half of the twentieth century. Hiding an illness from his children.
  • [CLAUDINE JASPER] Black, female-identifying, 60s, married to Sonny, a key figure in the student protest wing of the American civil rights movement who went on to become a highly visible politician, spokesman, and religious leader during the latter half of the twentieth century. She embraces her role of matriarch and is just as responsible for the political work her husband has accomplished. Strong-willed. Used to being in the spotlight.
  • [NAZARETH JASPER] Black, early-to-mid-30s, male-identifying. Youngest son of Sonny Jasper, a key figure in the student protest wing of the American civil rights movement who went on to become a highly visible politician, spokesman, and religious leader during the latter half of the twentieth century. A nature photographer (he did not go into the family business of politics). He's returned home to Chicago for his mother's birthday.
  • [SOLOMON “JUNIOR” JASPER JR] Black, late-30s/early-40s, male-identifying. Former State Senator, who served five consecutive terms before he was found guilty of federal embezzlement and a few counts of wire fraud. He was just released from prison. Slick and charming. He can take any curse and turn it into a blessing.
  • [MORGAN JASPER] Black, late-30s/early-40s, female-identifying. Married to Solomon, Jr. Got sucked up in her husband's political fall and was sentenced to 12 months for filing false tax returns but, because they have a set of twin boys, the judge allowed them to serve their time consecutively. She is about to go to prison and is not happy about it.
  • [AZIZA HOUSTON] Black, female-identifying, early to mid-30s. Earthy, headstrong, and determined. She was raised in a Black Panther household and that has shaped how she moves through life. She’s chosen to have a baby by herself. She is an outsider entering the world of the Jasper family as she doesn’t come from the political class.

  • [BIG] Black, male identifying, older than Lil. Larger, tattooed. Strong, but not that tough. Keeps their feelings close to the chest. Doesn’t talk much but when they do it’s searingly honest. A fighter. On their way out.
  • [LIL] Black, female-identifying, younger than Big. Younger, strong, but not that tough. Scrappy. Wears their heart on their sleeve. Talks a lot but takes a while to get to the truth. Also a fighter. On their way up.

A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO

By Mat Smart
Directed by Shelley Butler
In the Forum Theater (LORT B)
First Rehearsal Tue Aug 11, 2026
First Tech Tue Sep 08, 2026
First Preview Tue Sep 15, 2026
Opening Sat Sep 19, 2026
Closing Sun Oct 11, 2026

SEEKING:

  • [MARJE] Any ethnicity, female-identifying, 60s or older. The leader of the birding group. Marje knows it all about birds, but she is not a know-it-all. She wants everyone to appreciate the natural world and to learn about it. She encourages the group members to look – and really see the birds – before rushing to identifications. She likes to keep her personal life private.
  • [TESSA] Any ethnicity, female-identifying, 50s or older. In every birding group, there’s someone with a camera with huge telephoto lens who takes photos all the time. That’s Tessa. She’s more concerned about what she sees and getting a great shot than with any kind of communal experience. She can be abrasive and awkward, but she is also a formidable, passionate artist.
  • [RUTH] Any ethnicity, female-identifying, 50s. Ruth started birding after her husband abruptly died five years ago. She’s fallen in love with birding and loves the company of her fellow birders. Except for Tessa. Ruth is stubborn but still has a good sense of humor. Her daughter, Sadie, insisted on joining the birding group three weeks ago. However, Ruth insisted that they keep Sadie’s identity a secret. Ruth doesn’t want the group to know that she’s a widow; the last thing she wants to do is talk about her feelings.
  • [ED] Any ethnicity, male-identifying, mid-40s. Ed is filled with wonder for all things birds. He’s the most overtly enthusiastic member of the group. Unknown to the other birders, he’s a high-powered attorney, but he wishes he could have been an ornithologist.
  • [SADIE] Any ethnicity, female-identifying, late 20s. She’s the newest member of the birding group. She’s a fashionable, up-and-coming real estate agent who has joined the group to try help her mom Ruth move forward with her life. Sadie isn’t shy to talk about her feelings or give her mom advice. Sadie will probably not become a life-long birder after this.
