Male, 50s, A widower, stingy and displeased with practically everything around him. Strong, gruff and Wealthy (half a Millionaire) and intended to marry Irene Malloy, because he should. He doesn't know how funny and charming he is LEAD. Minimal singing required
IRENE MALLOY
Female, 30s beautiful, proper and elegant shopkeeper, very interested in getting married to improve her status and reputation in society. A devious sense of humor - and not as stiff as all those hats might make her seem. Soprano singing voice
CORNELIUS HACKL
Male 30s Vandegelder's chief clerk, comically awkward with women, but wanting to take life by the horns. A dreamer who sees everything that is possible Baritone singing voice
BARNABY TUCKER
Male early 20s Junior clerk in Vandegelder's feed store. Naive about the world with loads of boyish innocence, terrified of and excited by everything. Dance ability a major plus
MINNIE FAYE
Female 20s, Assistant in the Hat Shop, comically innocent, a follower. Ready to enter the world, if only she knew where it is. Dance ability a plus.
AMBROSE KEMPER
Male 20s an energetic artist who is in love with Ermengarde, must be a strong dancer

Female 20s very defiant and cries throughout the play. Comic actress with strong dance skills
