Singers, dancers and actors. Local hires preferred.

PREPARATION

Plan on arriving 10 minutes before your appointment time to check-in.
Prepare 32 bars of a song in the style of the show. Bring one headshot and resume.

BREAKDOWN

Tracy Turnblad - Stage age 15-20, Female, A spunky and scrappy teenager from the wrong side of the tracks who marches to the beat of her own drummer; she loves to dance to the rhythm of the new Motown sound; she is a big girl with even bigger dreams; she is a teenaged idealist, but not a pushover; she is willing to fight for what she believes in; seeking a very strong plus-sized actor, singer, dancer. Vocal Range: G3 – G5, Strong Dancer. Must attend Dance Call.

Corny Collins – Stage age 25+, Male, the handsome, charming, and charismatic host of the Corny Collins Show; he possesses a dynamic and captivating energy on-camera; off-camera he is ambitious, rebellious, and not afraid of a fight; seeking an exceptionally strong singer, dancer, actor who can light up a room. Vocal Range: D3 – A4, Strong Mover. Must attend Singer Call.

Edna Turnblad – Stage age 40+, Male, Tracy’s mom; a force of nature trapped inside a body that the world doesn’t understand; she is a working-class woman doing what she can to support her family and to help make ends meet; Edna abandoned her dream of becoming a fashion designer years ago when her physical size exceeded the McCalls patterns; as a result, she has shut herself away and lives vicariously through the television, movie-star magazines, romance novels, and her blossoming daughter, who is growing up way too fast; seeking a strong plus-sized actor, singer who moves really-well; someone who is excellent with comedy and has real heart. Vocal Range: F3-G5, Strong Mover. Must attend Singer Call.

Wilbur Turnblad, Mr. Pinky, Principal – Stage age 40+, Male, Tracy’s loving dad, and Edna’s devoted husband; he is the owner of the Har-De-Har Hut Joke shop; Wilbur works tirelessly to give his family the best life that he can possibly eek out; he is a romantic, a comedian, and an amateur magician. He makes the seemingly impossible possible; seeking a comedic character actor with a dry-odd-ball sense of humor who sings well. Also plays various supporting roles including a flamboyant fashion boutique owner and a condescending high school principal. Must be an inventive character actor. Simple dance/movement required. Vocal Range: A3-A5, Strong Mover. Must attend Singer Call.

Penny Pingleton – Stage age 15-20, Female, Tracy’s best friend; she is a sheltered little girl who is on the verge of exploding into womanhood; she is a wide-eyed fan girl, and a perky optimistic sidekick; Penny is socially awkward and nerdy; she has no idea what to do with herself and her body because she is completely sexually repressed; seeking a very strong comic actor, singer, and dancer. Vocal Range: A3-G5, Strong Dancer. Must attend Dance Call.

Amber Von Tussle – Stage age 15-20, Female, the reigning princess of the Corny Collins Show; she is totally self-centered and every calculated move she makes is designed to bring her greater stardom and more notoriety; she is a ravenous climber with the looks of a Barbie doll; she will stop at nothing to win the Miss Teenage Hairspray Competition; she is simultaneously mesmerizing and terrifying; seeking a very strong actor, singer, dancer. Vocal Range: A3-F5, Strong Dancer. Must attend Dance Call.

Velma Von Tussle – Stage age 40+, Female, Amber's mother and the director of Corny Collin's show. She is a devious taskmaster and snobby racist. The former Miss Baltimore Crabs will go to any length to ensure her daughter is the next big thing. Vocal Range: G3-E5, Strong Mover. Must attend Singer Call.

Link Larkin – Stage age 15-20, Male, the teenage heart-throb; he possesses a captivating, dangerous, yet effortless charisma and sexuality that drives people wild; he has dreams of stardom and the talent and moves to get him there if the right break comes along; seeking an excellent actor, singer, dancer. Vocal Range: G3-A5, Strong Dancer. Must attend Dance Call.

Seaweed J. Stubbs – Stage age 15-20, Male, (African American) Tracy's classmate and friend, who is discriminated against due to his skin color. He is cocky but surprisingly lovable. Talented in song and dance. He falls for Penny. Vocal Range: F3-D5, Strong Dancer. Must attend Dance Call.

Motormouth Maybelle – Stage age 40+, Female, (African American) She is Seaweed and Inez’s loving single mother doing the best she can to raise her kids right in a dangerous world; she is the business-savvy and open-hearted owner of her own record shop; she is the quick-witted, sharp rhyming, and dazzling host of “Negro Day” on the Corny Collins Show; she is big, blonde, and beautiful; she is also a Civil Rights soldier whose rich spirit has been forged by many battles; she is a powerful, soulful, funny, loving, and sexy lady; seeking a very strong, plus-sized singer and actor who moves really-well. Vocal Range: F3-E5, Strong Mover. Must attend Singer Call.

Little Inez – Stage age 13-15, Female, (African American) Spunky, tough, street-wise. Outgoing. Older than her years. Seaweed’s lovable little sister. Smart and cute, and uses it. Strong Broadway/pop singer. Vocal Range: LowA-HighF, Strong Dancer. Must attend Dance Call.

The Dynamites – Stage age 25+, Female, (African American) Judine, Kamilah, and Shayna – Talented black vocal trio a la The Supremes. Featured in many numbers together and usually in tight harmony. May double for other ensemble roles like 'Cindy Watkins,' etc. Must attend Dance Call.

Council Members – Stage age 16-19, Male & Female,Tammy, Brad, Fender, Brenda, Sketch, Shelley, IQ, Lou Ann – Dancers and singers on The Corny Collins Show. Perform in 5+ numbers including “Nicest Kids In Town” and “You Can’t Stop The Beat.” Strong Dancer. Must attend Dance Call.

Other students – Stage age 16-19, Male & Female, (African American) Gilbert, Duane, Lorraine, Stooie – Kids we find in detention, and most in Motormouth Maybelle's record shop. Perform in 4+ numbers including “Welcome to the 60’s” and “You Can’t Stop The Beat.” Strong Dancer. Must attend Dance Call.

Female Authority Figure – Stage age 35+, Female, One actress plays various zany female characters. Characters include Prudy Pingleton (Penny’s uptight, high-strung and small-minded mother), a sadistic Gym Teacher, a Cop and a sardonic Prison Matron (think “Saturday Night Live”). Actress also understudies Velma. Must be a versatile, sharp, funny, inventive character actress with a strong singing voice. Vocal Range: Mezzo with belt. Must attend Singer Call.
