HURRICANE DIANE
About the Play
Hurricane Diane by Madeleine George is an Obie Award-winning comedy for five women.
Premise: The Greek god Dionysus comes back to earth as Diane, a butch permaculture gardener. Her mission is to recruit four suburban women as her new Bacchae and return the earth to its wild state. Her way in is offering to redo their yards. It's a modern take on Euripides' The Bacchae, and it's funny until it very much isn't.
Setting: A well-appointed cul-de-sac in Red Bank, New Jersey, present day.
Tone: Sitcom-sharp comedy with a real reckoning underneath. Diane speaks directly to the audience, and the ending turns dark and ritualistic. The ensemble needs actors who can deliver quick comic timing and also play the tragedy straight.
SEEKING:
Diane: Butch or masculine-of-center, 30s–50s. Dionysus, god of wine, song and wildness, currently passing as a permaculture landscaper who spent years off the grid near Burlington, Vermont. Magnetic, cocky, profane and flirtatious, with a lot of crackling physical energy. Diane talks to the audience directly and holds the stage alone for long stretches. Has real star charisma, a loose and fluid body (movement or dance skills are a plus), and the ability to flip from playful to menacing.
Carol: 40s–50s, Female. Works in compliance at a scandal-plagued company, and HGTV Magazine is her escape. She wants a yard that's natural but neat, special but typical. Tightly wound and funny because she means every word. She's the Pentheus of the story: the neighbor who won't give in, and whose resistance brings on the catastrophe. Has precise comic control and the ability to play real panic by the end. Comic precision, escalation.
Pam: 40s–50s, Female. Loud, warm, blunt Jersey Italian-American who wears leopard print and is ready for the apocalypse. A doomsday prepper who worries about home security, and the cul-de-sac's comic engine. Possesses broad comic chops, a natural Jersey sound, and fearlessness. Under all the bravado is someone who wants to feel safe. Broad comedy, Jersey sound.
Beth: 30s–50s, Female. Her husband has left, her yard has gone to seed, and she's lost her footing. Fragile, eager to please, and Diane's easiest conquest. Possesses vulnerability and odd, specific comic timing, plus a real transformation from timid to unhinged once she joins the Bacchae. Vulnerability, transformation.
Renee: 40s–50s, Black female. The first editor of color at HGTV Magazine. Smart, polished, dryly funny and the most perceptive person on the block, with a woman she once loved in her past. She's often called the play's heart, and her late scene with Diane about identity and authenticity is its most intimate moment. Possesses intelligence, warmth and grounded stillness. Grounded wit, emotional depth.
PRIMARY TRUST
About the Play
Primary Trust is a full-length dramatic comedy play by Eboni Booth, having won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It takes place in Cranberry, New York, a small town of about 15,000 people roughly 40 miles east of Rochester, in the years before cell phones. The scenes move between Wally's Tiki Bar, the French restaurant Le Pousselet, the Yellowed Pages bookstore, and Primary Trust Bank.
SEEKING:
Kenneth: 38, Black male. A sensitive, isolated man who loves Mai Tais and must find a new path after losing his long-held job at a bookstore. He speaks directly to the audience and is on stage for nearly the whole show. Possesses warmth, stamina and precise comic timing.
Bert: 35-50, Black male. Kenneth's fiercely loyal, encouraging, and long-time best friend—who happens to be imaginary.
Corrina / Wally's Waiters / Bank Customers: 25-40, Black female. A versatile role primarily centered on Corrina, a kind tiki-bar waitress who nudges Kenneth to take a chance on a new life; seamlessly shifts to play various other waiters and clients.
Clay / Sam / Bartenders: 50-60s, male. The multi-role track featuring Sam (the ailing used bookstore owner who lays Kenneth off) and Clay (the friendly manager at the local bank who gives Kenneth a new job).
