BREAKDOWN

HAIRSPRAY

SYNOPSIS: Set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, HAIRSPRAY follows teenage Tracy Turnblad's dream to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight, leading to social change as Tracy campaigns for the show's integration.

[TRACY TURNBLAD] Female, 18+ to play high school age, white. Our story’s unsuspecting protagonist, she is large and in charge. Confident, talented, and incredibly determined. A romantic with a good heart and desire to cut up the dance floor. Always on top of the latest trends. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL RANGE: G3 – G5.

[EDNA TURNBLAD] Male, 40 – 55, white. Tracy’s big and blonde mother. She is a working housewife who has lost her confidence and dream to be a plus-size clothing designer. Boisterous and commanding. Great comic timing. Often played in drag. VOCAL RANGE: F3 – G5.

[LINK LARKIN] Male, 18+ to play high school age, white. The star heartthrob on Corny Collins’ show. He is extremely attractive and talented. Hoping to get his big break with a recording contract, he unexpectedly falls for Tracy. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL RANGE: G3 – A5.

[CORNY COLLINS] Male, 25 – 35, white. The charismatic host of the Corny Collins Show. Good looking and smooth-talking, he is a genuinely nice guy both on and off camera. Very charismatic – charming and engaging. VOCAL RANGE: D3 – A4.

[PENNY PINGLETON] Female, 18+ to play high school age, white. Tracy’s best friend and dorky sidekick. Not the brightest girl, but she has good intentions. Bursting to get free of her mother’s dominating control, she falls for Seaweed with child-like curiosity. VOCAL RANGE: A3 – G5.

[SEAWEED J. STUBBS] Male, 18+ to play high school age, black. Tracy’s classmate and friend, who is discriminated against due to his skin color. He is cocky but surprisingly lovable. He falls for Penny. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL RANGE: F3 – D5.

[MOTORMOUTH MAYBELLE] Female, 40 – 50, black. Seaweed and Little Inez’s mother, she also appears as the Guest DJ on the Corny Collins’ Negro Day Show. Big, blonde, beautiful - and proud of it. She is bold and confident. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL RANGE: F3 – E5.

[WILBUR TURNBLAD] Male, 40 – 55, white. Tracy’s simpleminded, goofy and kind father. He owns the Har-De-Har joke shop and is still madly in love with his wife, Edna. He encourages her dreams. VOCAL RANGE: A3 – A5.

[VELMA VON TUSSLE] Female, 45 – 55, white. Amber’s mother and the director of Corny Collins’ show. She is a devious taskmaster and snobby racist. Conniving and manipulative, this former Miss Baltimore Crabs will go to any length to ensure her daughter is the next big thing. VOCAL RANGE: G3 – E5.

[AMBER VON TUSSLE] Female, 18+ to play high school age, white. Link’s girlfriend and Tracy’s nemesis. She is pretty, thin, shallow, snobby, and racist. She is expected to win Miss Baltimore Hairspray. Always feels the need to be the center of attention. VOCAL RANGE: A3 – F5.

[LITTLE INEZ] Female, early teens, black. Seaweed’s little sister. Strong singer/dancer. VOCAL RANGE: F4 – F#5.

[THE DYNAMITES] Female, late teens to 20s, black. The Dynamites consist of Judine, Kamilah and Shayna. The Dynamites are a talented vocal trio who are featured in many numbers and usually in tight harmony. VOCAL RANGE: Soprano, Mezzo and Alto.

[FEMALE AUTHORITY FIGURE] Female, 40 – 55, white. The Female Authority Figure covers the roles of Prudy Pingleton (Penny’s uptight mother), the sadistic gym teacher and the prison matron. VOCAL RANGE: D4 – B4.

[MALE AUTHORITY FIGURE] Male, 40 – 55, white. The Male Authority Figure covers the roles of Harriman F. Spritzer (Corny Collins show sponsor), the high-blood pressured principal and Mr. Pinky (owner of a plus-sized dress shop). VOCAL RANGE: OPEN.

[MALE ENSEMBLE] Male, 15 – 25, white and black. To play dancers on The Corny Collins Show (Brad, Fender, Sketch, IQ) as well as The Motormouth Kids. May play other featured roles as well. Must be strong dancers who sing and act well. VOCAL RANGES: ALL.

[FEMALE ENSEMBLE] Female, 15 – 25, white and black. To play dancers on The Corny Collins Show (Tammy, Brenda, Shelley, Lou-Ann) as well as The Dynamites and The Motormouth Kids. May play other featured roles as well. Must be strong dancers who sing and act well. VOCAL RANGES: ALL.
