TROY:
African-American male, early-mid 50s; Ex-star baseball player, now raising a family and driving a garbage truck. A Big Man, in stature and personality. Struggles to balance the things he feels he owes his wife and children with the things he feels he owes himself. Honest, hardworking and the definition of strong-willed.
ROSE:
African-American female, 40s; Troy's wife of 18 years. Loyal and kind-hearted, with a deep-rooted strength. A devoted and equal partner to Troy, she balances their relationship with a humor and lightness that keeps her grounded.
CORY:
African-American male, 20s; Troy and Rose's only child together. At the play's onset, Corey is filled with hope and potential to rise above his current placement in life. He desires to makes his parents proud and is struggling in his life to step out from beneath his father's formidable shadow.
GABRIEL:
African-American male, 40-50; Troy's younger and only brother. After suffering a head injury fighting in World War II, he believes he is the Archangel Gabriel, waiting for the judgment day. Has strong spiritual intuition and relies on this to guide him. Has moments of clarity in which he is aware of his reliance on Troy.
LYONS
African-American male, mid-late 30s; Troy's son from a previous marriage. Struggling jazz musician, constantly searching for what fulfills him. Smooth and charming. Has learned his way through manhood being streetwise. Has a conflicted, unresolved relationship with Troy.
