BREAKDOWN

COUNT DRACULA: (mid 30s-early 50s) Disguised as a distinguished, old-world gentleman who is a bit stiff, formal, and socially awkward; in truth he is not a tragic romantic hero but a dark, dangerous, monstrous predator; actor must be in excellent physical condition; please prepare the audition with an Eastern European accent.

ABRAM VAN HELSING: (50s/70s) A doctor with a wide range of interests, expertise, and accomplishments. He has a razor-sharp mind and an intense interest in the supernatural. Actor must be in good physical condition.

LUCY WESTPHAL: (late 20s-early 30s) She transforms from a frail innocent Victorian women to a demonic force imprisoned by Dracula. Must be physically strong and agile and portray the full range from sweet innocence to wildly sensual to animalistic. Please sing a cappella any short folk tune or ballad.

NORBERT BRIGGS: (mid-late 30s) An attendant in the asylum. A rough character; not entirely a brute, but capable of violent behavior when pushed to it. Understudies Van Helsing. Acts as Fight Captain.

ROBERT RENFIELD: (mid-late 30s) Nervous and erratic though intelligent and educated. His distressed preoccupation indicates insanity. Actor must be highly imaginative and physically creative, able to handle highly theatrical forms and language within a realistic context. Charactor appears malnourished and physically slight but is capable of fierce physical action. Facility for both physical and verbal comedy with real pain and terror underneath it all – a true tragic/comic character. Please sing a cappella any short folk tune or ballad.
