BREAKDOWN
3PENNY OPERA
SYNOPSIS: This is a politically charged, fully adapted new version of Brecht & Weill's Threepenny Opera commissioned by the Off-Brand Opera Company. It is set in contemporary times, NYC, and is shaped with much of the current politics and issues of the day.
ALL CHARACTERS can be ANY ethnicity if not otherwise stated. All roles should be able to sing well and have excellent comedic skills.
SEEKING:
- PIRATE JENNY – CAST. Female, 40s. A prostitute. Dry, brooding, intense, vulnerable, quick. Macheath’s most faithful lover. The one who is most devoted to him.
- MACHEATH – CAST. Male, 30s. A gangster. A silly vaudevillian, and a dangerous man. Mysterious, charming, and casually cruel.
- POLLY PEACHUM – CAST. Female, 70s. The Bride. Doe-eyed, or formerly doe-eyed, oblivious, silly, quick, grand, very Gracie Allen.
- PEACHUM – Male, either 20s OR 60s/70s. The Father. This role can either be someone quite young or someone older. Peachum is a self-serving entrepreneur, and manipulator of people and the system. He runs an outfit for poor immigrants to make money off of even poorer immigrants based on their legal status. Sharp, erudite, commanding, wiley.
- MRS. PEACHUM – CAST. Female, 20s. The Mother. Unsympathetic, stern, tough, and innocent.
- TIGER BROWN – CAST. Female, 20s. The Chief of Police. Charming, befuddled, intimidating, and terrified.
- LUCY BROWN – Female, 70s. The other woman. Tough as nails, grand, grounded, does not suffer fools, and in love with Macheath.
THE GANG:
- PAM – CAST. Any gender. Any age. A shapeshifter and a vaudevillian. Excellent with sharp comedy, sarcasm, and big characterizations. Good singer. Will play a gangster, a prostitute, and a beggar, and upwards of several parts.
- STUFFY STEVIE – Any gender. Any age. A shapeshifter and a vaudevillian. Excellent with sharp comedy, sarcasm, and big characterizations. Good singer. Will play a gangster, a prostitute, and a beggar, and upwards of several parts.
- KRUSTI KRISTI – Any gender. Any age. A shapeshifter and a vaudevillian. Excellent with sharp comedy, sarcasm, and big characterizations. Good singer. Will play a gangster, a prostitute, and a beggar, and upwards of several parts.
