About this studio
Karavan Studio was founded in 1988 by Karen Barbee Adkisson and has operated in San Antonio, Texas ever since, teaching Middle Eastern dance (belly dance) for more than 35 years. Training is curriculum-based and grounded in American Cabaret style, emphasizing technical precision, musical literacy and cultural respect rather than choreography alone. Classes run for beginners through advanced dancers, both in person at the studio and live online via Zoom, and are supplemented by workshops, self-paced courses, private lessons and studio events. Its signature program, Project Band, running since 2013, trains dancers to improvise and perform with live Arabic musicians. Instructors are long-time students of the studio who bring backgrounds in ballet, jazz, modern, contemporary and fusion, and specializms such as prop work and finger cymbals.
