by BWW News Desk - April 28, 2017
Kitchen Dog Theater continues its 26th season of theater with the area premiere of Trevor by Nick Jones. Inspired by true events,?Trevor?is a subversive comedy about fame, success, and the lies we tell ourselves to keep people from taking away an erratic, 200-pound chimpanzee. At the center of this hilarious and heart-wrenching play are two individuals fighting against a world unable to understand their love: Trevor, a chimpanzee who once performed in commercials with the likes of Morgan Fairchild, and his owner Sandra, who swears he would never hurt a fly...at least not on purpose. KDT Co-Artistic Director Tina Parker directs this hilarious and heartbreaking exploration of family, flawed communication, and humanity.

BWW Review: LYSISTRATA at Lakeside Community Theatre
by Christina Hoth - April 25, 2017
Currently on stage at Lakeside is the Greek comedy: 'Lysistrata'.  Though written by Aristophanes eons ago, this play has many shockingly contemporary, relevant themes of women rising up to have their voices heard, while men consistently fight to prove who boasts the larger... ego.  As an audience member, Director Dale Moon's forward in the playbill gives solid insight into the culture of 411 BC:  'Ancient Athens was considered to be a 'phallocracy' because of the everyday emphasis on the penis.  It was a symbol of male power, of military strength, and, most importantly, fertility, both human and agricultural.'  Lysistrata is a Grecian matriarch, although such a thing would have been largely frowned upon in her day, whose simple aspiration is to end the Peloponnesian War through drastic measures.  She proposes that the women of her nation withhold sexual interaction with their men as a means to protest their continued battles.  In turn, she hopes that the men of the nation will opt for peace in a desperate attempt to relieve their own, intimate tensions.

BWW Review: THE LITTLE MERMAID at Casa Manana
by Kyle Christopher West - April 24, 2017
Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID debuted in movie theatres way back in 1989, but nearly twenty years of children singing "Kiss The Girl," "Part of your World," and "Pour Unfortunate Souls" led Disney to produce the celebrated story on a Broadway stage in 2009. And although the show lasted less than two years in New York, it is quickly becoming a staple among high schools, regional and youth theatres. Casa Manana's current production (using the edited "Junior" version of the script) is a shining example of what the show is written to inspire: fun and freedom!
BWW Review: ELECTRA at Dallas Theater Center
by Kyle Christopher West - April 24, 2017
There are few theatres doing Greek tragedy these days, but Dallas Theater Center has taken on the challenge of making Sophocles' tragic tale of ELECTRA one that will resonate with a modern audience. Dallas Theater Center's 'one-of-a-kind outdoor experience' of the play not only embraces all the drama; it raises the stakes with a fresh, in-your-face approach.

With music and lyrics by the celebrated Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, this vulgar delight of a production is no small undertaking; however, the students and faculty of TCU's Theatre department proved they were certainly up to the challenge.
