Denton Community Theatre Holds IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST Auditions, 7/12 & 13

By:

Dention Community Theatre announces auditions for THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, which will be held July 12th and 13th starting at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre, located at 214 W. Hickory Street in downtown Denton. Callbacks will be held July 14, if needed. The Denton Community Theatre production is directed by Michael Bolen. Auditions are open – no appointments and will consist of Cold Readings from the script and Improvisation. The style is that of Comedy of Manners and the setting is London and its suburbs in 1895. An upper class British dialect will be required of the actors. Head shots and resumes are helpful, but not necessary.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST is a classic comedic farce set in late Victorian England. When Jack, known as Ernest to his city friends, reveals his double life to his aristocratic best friend, Algernon, Algernon reveals his similar duplicity to avoid social obligations. Jack wishes to marry Gwendolyn who is Algernon's cousin. Algernon travels to Jack's country home and poses as Jack's fictional brother, Ernest, to win the hand of Cecily who is Jack's young ward. Both young ladies claim to be in love, at least in part, because of the name, Ernest. Jack/ Ernest, having been abandoned as a baby and adopted fails to have the proper pedigree for Gwendolyn's mother, Lady Bracknell, to approve of her daughter's marriage to him. He refuses to allow Algernon to marry his ward unless Lady Bracknell changes her mind. The Situation is resolved by an absent minded governess and it all adds up to Oscar Wilde's most enduringly popular play.

Rehearsals will begin July 19 and be held Monday-Thursday nights from 7-10 pm until Tech week. One or two Saturdays may be needed depending on the rate of progress and technical demands. Performances are Sept. 17, 18, 24, 25 at 7:30 pm & Sept. 19, 26 at 2 pm.
