2014 Studio SCR Series Continues with ST. JUDE, Now thru 1/16
The 2014 Studio SCR series at South Coast Repertory continues in February with the one-man show St. Jude, written by and starring Luis Alfaro. Robert Egan directs. Performances run today, Feb. 13-16 in the Nicholas Studio at SCR. Tickets are available at (714) 708-5555 or www.scr.org.
St. Jude is one of Alfaro's most personal creations, a poignant and profoundly human play about love and family. The narrative of St. Jude is inspired by Alfaro's personal journey-as an adult and a son-during his father's serious illness. Alfaro wrote while his father received treatment at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, Calif. The play travels from Highway 99 to Alfaro's hometown in the central valley of California. Every stop is a conjured memory from his youth, with the journey ending at St. Jude Hospital. The play is funny, tragic and surprising. In Alfaro's words, St. Jude chronicles "going from 'what I am' to 'who I was.'" St. Jude premiered in 2013 as part of the Radar L.A. Festival.
Award-winning Alfaro is one of America's leading, sought-after playwrights and solo performers. His plays and performances have been seen throughout the country and around the world. He is an SCR-commissioned playwright through the Crossroads Project, which focuses on developing new plays inspired by the artistic and cultural diversity of Orange County; he formerly was commissioned through SCR's Hispanic Playwrights Festival. In addition, Alfaro is a MacArthur Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation fellow, and a Mellon Foundation Playwright-in-Residence with Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Alfaro is the only artist to have won two awards in the same year from The Kennedy Center's Fund for New American Plays. He is also the recipient of awards from the National Endowment of the Arts, Theatre Communications Group and PEN/USA, among others. He has performed and had plays produced around the world, including Mexico, Scotland, England, Romania and the United States. He is a professor at the University of Southern California School of Dramatic Arts.
Now in its fourth year, Studio SCR offers a mix of ambitious, provocative and experimental theatrical works in partnership with some of southern California's most innovative companies, presented in SCR's intimate 94-seat Nicholas Studio
Performances are Thursday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 14, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 15, at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Feb. 16, at 3 p.m. St. Jude contains adult content.
