Shaolin Warriors Come To The Jorgensen 10/20

By:

It is not wise to argue with a Shaolin monk. In a stunningly inventive production, the Shaolin Warriors show just why, as they bring their spectacular kung fu skills to Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, October 20 at 7:30 pm. Originally trained to protect themselves in battle-torn feudal China, the disciples of the Shaolin schools eventually became the stuff of legends, known throughout the world for their disciplined Buddhist spiritualism and deadly martial-arts prowess - yet they renounce aggression.

From a young age, the monks train daily in the temple, perfecting the art of bare hand and weapons combat. However, it is their daily seated meditation that enables them to endure extreme physical pain and the demanding physical regimen. By practicing Ch'an (Zen), they calm the body and focus the mind to a single, concentrated point to attain a quiet, completely focused mental state.

Every monk is required to become extraordinarily proficient in each of the 18 traditional weapons, from The Common ax to the more exotic black tiger hammer, and to become a master in one. Historically, Shaolin monks have been armed not only with four major weapons, but also with others hidden on their bodies. In addition, they could turn virtually any common object, even a broom, into a weapon. But it was the serene, focused mind that was their greatest defense.

The Shaolin Warriors bring these skills to the stage in a powerful, heart-stopping production. Backed by simple, but stunning sets, music, and a light air of incense, the monks follow a silent story arc based on their daily lives, traditions and philosophy. They break metal bars over their heads and lie on sword points without tricks or special effects. But they also spontaneously interact with the audience to lighten the show's raw emotional impact.

The Washington Post says the Shaolin Warriors "combine the agility and grace of gymnasts with the showmanship of Cirque du Soleil performers." Their slow, fluid movements explode suddenly with visceral strength in a choreography that is dazzlingly acrobatic, but authentically replicates fierce animal fighting techniques. The tiger's power and the scorpion's cunning and speed are embodied in a hypnotic, balletic duel, as the mind strives to master mere physicality - and wins.

Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts is located at 2132 Hillside Road on the UConn campus in Storrs. Regular tickets are $25, $27 and $30, with some discounts available.
