Long Wharf Theatre has offered adults the opportunity, through its Education Department, to explore the great playwrights, from Chekhov to Shakespeare. Now, the theatre will allow adults to learn that most American of art forms, musical theatre.

"It seemed like the next best step," said Annie DiMartino, the theatre's director of education. "I think music is something everyone can relate to."

Long Wharf Theatre begins its Fall Studio School session with "Exploring Musical Theatre (For Adults)," classes taking place from Saturday mornings, October 17 through November 21, and "Growing Up In Musicals (For Teens Age 12-16)," which will be held Monday evenings from October 19 through November 16.

DiMartino said that often adults tend to be slightly more squeamish about singing that kids do; indeed, most people's first experience with theatre comes through their high school musical. She points out though that even the most skittish singer can achieve success through the application of strong acting technique.

"When you feel an emotion you speak it. When the emotion becomes stronger and you can't do it justice, you have to sing it. When it becomes greater still, you put it into movement or dance. In a musical you'll have all three of these things so you can touch an audience on multiple levels," DiMartino said.
