Beck Center for the Arts has completed the second phase of its renovation project, made possible by over $5.3M raised from the community toward a $6.7M Capital Campaign goal. The public fundraising phase began with a campaign rally, called “Raise the Roof,” held on Thursday, March 10, 2020, and continued with a celebration of the first completed phase, our renovated Fowler-Spellman Education Wing, on March 10, 2021.

The play by Puerto Rican playwright Manuel Méndez Ballestar tells the story of misery and poverty during the sugarcane era in Puerto Rico, poor jíbaros with nothing to throw into the pot on the stove who focused more on economic needs that were more important than family morality.The family suffers from the policies and social system of the moment.

As the story goes, 'In 1991, Jeannette Sorrell was invited to interview for the position of Assistant Conductor with The Cleveland Orchestra. Sorrell met with Music Director Christoph von Dohnányi who told her that there was no point in trying to find time in the orchestra's schedule for an audition because the audience in Cleveland would never accept a woman as a conductor. Sorrell replied that she had actually not sought this post and she really wanted to work with period instruments. Following this interview, the orchestra's artistic administrator, Roger Wright, offered to help Sorrell launch a period-instrument orchestra in Cleveland.'
