Howard County Arts Council Awards Over $300,000 in Grants for FY10

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman announced that 37 arts and cultural organizations will receive $332,843.00 in matching grants from the Howard County Arts Council for Fiscal Year 2010. The awards were announced at the Arts Council's annual meeting and reception at the Howard County Center for the Arts on September 11, 2009. These matching grants will be used by 16 Howard County organizations; 10 Howard County public schools; and 11 key Baltimore City organizations to support general operations, artist residencies, and special projects in the arts.

Community Arts Development Grants fund day-to-day activities for Howard County arts organizations as well as special projects in the arts. $193,641.00 was awarded to the following

16 organizations for FY2010:

Candlelight Concert Society, Inc. Operating $22,078.00

Chesapeake Shakespeare Company Operating $24,375.00

Columbia Center for Theatrical Arts Operating $32,453.00

Columbia Concert Band and Columbia

Jazz Band Project $3,000.00

Columbia Festival of the Arts Operating $38,273.78

The Columbia Orchestra Operating $20,470.00

Columbia Pro Cantare, Ltd. Operating $22,408.00

Howard Community College Educational

Foundation, Inc. for Rep Stage Project $2,719.00

Howard County Ballet Project $2,300.00

Howard County Poetry & Literature Society Operating $10,616.00

Hua Sha Chinese Dance Center Project $2,523.22

Little Patuxent Review Project $1,870.00

Misako Ballet Company Project $2,796.00

Orchestra of St.John's Project $2,500.00

Showtime Singers Project $2,766.00

Sundays at Three Project $2,493.00

The Jim Rouse Theatre (JRT) Subsidy Program assists community arts groups by partially underwriting theatre rental fees. $10,640.00 was awarded to the following 4 organizations for FY2010:

Howard County Poetry & Literature Society $760.00

Hua Sha Chinese Dance Center $760.00

Artist-in-Education Project Grants are a partnership between the Arts Council and local Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) to place professional artists in residence at Howard County Schools to help student's foster creative expression. $17,560.00 in funding was awarded to the following 10 schools for FY2010:

Baltimore City Arts and Cultural Grants provide funding to key Baltimore City organizations that provide significant services to Howard County residents. $121,642.00 was awarded to the following 11 organizations for FY2010:

The Baltimore Museum of Art $22,204.69

Baltimore Museum of Industry $3,748.55

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra $18,130.80

Center Stage Associates, Inc. $14,517.45

Maryland Science Center $8,719.25

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore $7,389.35

National Aquarium in Baltimore $19,636.79

Walters Art Museum $14,478.78

Howard County Arts Council grants are awarded on the basis of artistic merit, ability of the applicant to carry out the project, and level of servIce To the community. Grants are made through a competitive process in which applications are reviewed by an advisory panel made up of academics and artists representing a variety of disciplines. Grant award recommendations are then reviewed and approved by the Howard County Arts Council Board of Directors.

The Arts Council's grant program is supported through grants from the Howard County government and the Maryland State Arts Council as well as through the Howard County Arts Council's own foundation, corporate, and individual giving initiatives.

The Howard County Arts Council is a non-profit organization whose mission is to serve the citizens of Howard County by fostering the arts, artists and arts organizations. The Howard County Arts Council receives major grants from the Howard County Government and the Maryland State Arts Council and sustaining annual support from corporate, foundation and individual sponsors.
