Assistant Technical Director, CoPA - The New School

The Assistant Technical Director, CoPA is responsible for supporting the Technical Director, Production Management team & Vice Dean for Production in all areas of technical direction and facilities management as assigned throughout the College, including but not limited to Drama Mainstage productions, Operas, Ensemble Concerts, experimental productions, external performance partnerships and musicals. The Assistant Technical Director, CoPA will be key support to the technical operations for the CoPA production department.



In addition to supporting the Technical Director in advising on technical strategies, schedules, and budgets for all Productions and events throughout the college, s/he will play a role in bridging the technical and educational components of work throughout CoPA, building and maintaining relationships with current faculty, students, external partners, designers, staff and other University departments.



The Assistant Technical Director, CoPA reports directly to the Technical Director, CoPA. This position is a 40-week, hourly position during the academic year (late-August through late-May); the position has access to the 12-month, full-time benefits package as offered by The New School.



Responsibilities:

- As assigned by the Technical Director, support the technical design, drafting, engineering and building scenic elements for CoPA Productions in the School of Drama, Mannes School of Music, and School of Jazz & Contemporary Music

- Lead out scenic construction, load ins, strikes and notes for productions

- In conjunction with Technical Director, prepare build drawings for in-house scenic construction and/or bid packages for scenic shops

- Help to evaluate costs and feasibility of designs

- Maintain inventories and upkeep of scenic elements and shop equipment

- Ensure that safety and fire procedures are followed daily by crews

- Recruit, hire and supervise part time carpenters, scenic painters, show crew, student workers and temporary employees throughout CoPA for technical related work

- Act as lead Technical Director on assigned projects

- Build strong relationships with University facilities, IT departments and external partners for production related matters

- Flexible hours as needed, based on project assignment

- Other duties as assigned



- Three to five years previous experience in theatrical technical direction is required

- Strong carpentry and rigging skills required

- Experience in an educational or teaching environment

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- Knowledge of industry standards for employee safety & rigging

- The ability to work productively, graciously and with appropriate sense of humor under strict time constraints

- Strong working knowledge of the operations of carpentry/rigging; lighting; sound; carpentry/props

- Proficient in AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks
