Silk Road Rising co-founders, Artistic Director Jamil Khoury and Executive Director Malik Gillani, have announced two world premiere productions for 2012, Jamil Khoury's Re-Spiced: A Silk Road Cabaret and Adriana Sevahn Nichols' Night Over Erzinga. Both productions will be presented in the company's venue in Pierce Hall at The Historic Chicago Temple Building at 77 W. Washington St. in Chicago. Silk Road Rising also hopes to present limited runs of original pieces by two solo performers, not yet finalized.

Re-Spiced: A Silk Road Cabaret

April 4 – May 6, 2012

Song and Narrative Selection by Jamil Khoury
Directed by Steven Scott
Musical Direction by Ryan Brewster
Choreographed by Brenda Didier

Re-Spiced: A Silk Road Cabaret is a playful, sexy, occasionally subversive, always entertaining, musical pastiche of Asian and Middle Eastern images in American and British song. From Broadway show tunes to pop, from country to rap, from folk to jazz to rock, Re-Spiced turns the tables on "us" and "them" with panache and glee and leaves us wondering just who's who?

Night Over Erzinga

October 9 – November 11, 2012

Written by Adriana Sevahn Nichols
Directed by Lisa Portes

Spanning the Ottoman Empire to New York City, Night Over Erzinga interweaves three generations of an Armenian American family. From collective tragedy to personal triumph, ancestors reunite with the living in Adriana Sevahn Nichols' breathtakingly beautiful journey toward making peace with the past and finding solace amidst despair.

Adriana Sevahn Nichol's Night Over Erzinga was originally commissioned and developed by Middle East America: A National New Plays Initiative created by Golden Thread Productions (San Francisco), The Lark Play Development Center (NYC), and Silk Road Rising (Chicago).

Silk Road Rising's production of Night Over Erzinga is part of a two city rolling world premiere that began at Golden Thread Productions in San Francisco (September 2011) and concludes in Chicago (October/November 2012).

About Silk Road Rising

Silk Road Rising (formerly known as Silk Road Theatre Project) creates live theatre and online videos that tell stories through primarily Asian American and Middle Eastern American lenses. In representing communities that intersect and overlap we are advancing a polycultural worldview.
