On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed bachelor Robert examines his life. why isn't he married? He flits through the dinners, dates, weddings and divorces he has experienced with his married friends in an attempt to pinpoint his problem, often to comic and touching results. This musical journey, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by George Furth, and orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick, flashes from karate chopping couples to run-a-way brides, and each scenario leads Robert closer to his own catharsis. This six time Tony winner was named "Best Musical" upon its debut in 1971 and is considered a "game-changer" because it reinvented what musical theatre can be with innovative songs and a non-linear plot. In 2007 it again won awards including the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.
