On Saturday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m., the York Symphony Orchestra will present "Lullaby of Birdland," a performance that highlights pieces named for nature's original aviators. The evening will include iconic selections including Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite" and Rossini's "La Gazza Ladra (The Thieving Magpie)" as well as the Pennsylvania premiere of Dan LockLair's 2007 composition "Phoenix for Orchestra." The York Symphony Orchestra's own John Eaken, Concertmaster, will also be showcased during a presentation of Vaughan Williams pastoral romance, The Lark Ascending.

"This performance will take flight with a unique blend of heart-pounding overtures and poetic pieces," said Lawrence Golan, music director and conductor of the York Symphony Orchestra. "The audience is in for a treat with the Pennsylvania premiere of Locklair's Phoenix. His pieces feature a compelling blend of modern ingenuity and traditional homage."

The York Symphony Orchestra's Concertmaster, John Eaken, will be featured during a special violin solo during a presentation of Vaughan Williams pastoral romance, The Lark Ascending. Eaken is a renowned violinist, recitalist and concertmaster recognized across the country. His talent has taken him to perform at places, such as Temple University, Penn State University, Manhattan School of Music, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and with orchestras around the country, including the Maryland Symphony, Long Island Youth Symphony, National Chamber Players and the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra to name a few. He is also recognized as a member of the Eaken Piano Trio, a Grammy-nominated group, who made their Carnegie Hall debut in 1993 to a sold-out audience and has since then achieved many accomplishments, from touring in Europe and performing in China to releasing eight CDs nationwide.

"We're looking forward to showcasing our very own Concertmaster, John Eaken," said Golan. "Vaughan Williams poetic "The Lark Ascending" will offer a great opportunity to showcase his range and mastery as a performer."

The York Symphony Orchestra will present "Lullaby of Birdland" Saturday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in York. Single tickets starting at $9 for adults and $5 for students are available online at www.yorksymphony.org and by calling 717-846-1111.
