York Symphony Orchestra Announces 2016-17 Season

The York Symphony Orchestra announces its 2016-17 season, A Musical Journey Through Time, a series of eleven performances, which will include: a Classical series featuring six performances, inspired by some of the best known compositions of all time; three Pops performances, featuring the music of John Williams, the Titanic, and holiday selections audiences will know and love; along with two family-focused presentations, including the popular educational concert featuring Classical Kids from Chicago and a performance featuring National Public Radio's, From The Top, Christopher O'Riley. Music Director and Conductor, Lawrence Golan, returns to the stage after a successful 2015-16 season to lead the orchestra on this time-inspired journey.

"This season, we're excited to take our programming in a new direction as we invite the community to join us on a Musical Journey Through Time," said Golan. "We look forward to bringing to the stage a mix of some of the best-known works from each period alongside some of the best-kept secrets. We will once again welcome nationally acclaimed artists to the stage and will immerse audiences in performances including visual presentations, actor portrayals and special performance groups including belly dancers and a puppet troupe."

Classical Series

A Baroque Beginning
Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016 at 7:30 p.m.
The classical series begins with an extravagantly ornate period, when one of the greatest composers, Antonio Vivaldi, created his best-known work-The Four Seasons. The concertos will feature critically acclaimed and local favorite violinist Odin Rathnam. And exploring the Baroque period's grandeur would not be complete without the music of Bach and Handel.

Classical Classics
Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.
The Classical Era is a historical time in music history, which produced perhaps the most recognizable sounds in Western music-Beethoven's transcendent Symphony No. 5. The melodic notes of Haydn and Mozart, featuring the York Symphony Orchestra Principal Woodwinds, will surround the audience with the elegance of this 18th century period.

The Romantics
Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.

Emotion and individualism reign supreme in this intense period that gave birth to Tchaikovsky's heart-pounding Symphony No. 4. Maestro Lawrence Golan, with his violin in hand, will join American cellist Steven Honigberg of the National Symphony Orchestra in a presentation of Johannes Brahms' fierce double-concerto.

A Brave New World
Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.

Boundaries are pushed and new vistas are reached in the 20th Century. Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff throw out the old rules in this multi-dimensional concert featuring master pianist Haochen Zhang, Gold-Medal Winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Puppets from Half Mad Theatre and belly dancers from the Aubergine Belly Dance Troupe enter this "Brave New World" and light up the stage during Strauss' "Dance of the Seven Veils" and Stravinsky's Petrushka.

The American Dream
Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.

What does the future hold for classical music? In this concert, today's composers-Beckel, Brubeck and Boyer, along with those who came in search of the American Dream are explored. Throughout the evening, real life memoirs and letters from Ellis Island are brought to life through theatrical presentations by Jack Hartman and actors from York Little Theatre. The award-winning trio Time for Three also takes the stage in a genre-bending performance.

Carmina Burana
Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.

The old and the new collide in the season finale, featuring the York Symphony Chorus and Susquehanna Children's Chorale. Based on 24 poems from the medieval collection Carmina Burana, this scenic cantata composed by Carl Orff hits the stage. Serena Benedetti (soprano), Blake Friedman (tenor) and Marcus DeLoach (baritone) join the performers in this epic conclusion to the York Symphony Orchestra's Musical Journey Through Time.

The Music of John Williams: 85th Birthday Celebration
Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016 at 7:30 p.m.

Take a trip down movie memory lane with the sounds of film composer John Williams. Sit back and enjoy this pops performance which will include the familiar music of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, E.T., Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Jaws and more. It's his 85th birthday, and there's no better way to celebrate the film composer who's won Academy Awards, Grammys, Golden Globes, and Emmys among many more.

Holiday Pops Spectacular
Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016 at 4:00 p.m.

Back by popular demand on Thanksgiving weekend! Kick off the holiday season with a family-friendly performance featuring the holiday favorites you know and love. Featuring a special appearance by members of York's very own Unforgettable Big Band. Last year's holiday performance was a sell-out! Don't miss your chance to join in this celebration that will be sure to get you into the holiday spirit.

Titanic
Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.
The best-selling soundtrack hits the stage for a one-night only performance featuring highlights from the Academy Award-winning film, the Tony Award-winning musical, and the actual music performed onboard the ship. This memorable evening features conductor Lawrence Golan on the violin, and award winning Broadway actors and singers Nat Chandler and Teri Hansen.

Family Concert

Young Person's Concert
Wednesday, Nov. 2 & Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016 at 10:00 a.m.
This family-friendly performance will feature a special presentation by Classical Kids and will offer an educationally entertaining concert that weaves the music of one of the greatest composers of all time. Join conductor Stephen Czarkowski for the engaging and dramatic performance of Beethoven Lives Upstairs.
